I've been using GrooveIP with my Google voice number since I got my Nexus last week. When on WiFi it works great, of course when on a cell network it is really hit or miss.

Jason as long as the app is on you can receive calls with GrooveIP.

Jason Elwart You can make and receive calls with Talkatone.  Dustin Schmidt Is GrooveIP free? I remember having to purchase it. I never could get very good voice quality through GrooveIP either, no matter how much I tweaked the settings.

Free on WiFi Jason Elwart. If you want to use GrooveIP on your mobile connection it's $5.

You do have to pay $5 to use on cellular networks. Overall, when on WiFi it works well for me. People on the other end don't really complain. Overall for me personally it works for what I need it to do and that is save a boat load of money over Verizon.

I've had better call quality with TalkaTone fwiw. GrooveIP on mobile data is pretty sucky. ?

Dustin Schmidt 408-647-4636 is a number set up to test VoIP calling. Very handy.

Groove IP is reported shutting down and I assume Talkatone but have not heard because Google is giving them time to change the use of the Google Voice service I think by March 2014. Basically Google has allowed them to break the terms of use until now and is giving them time to change or shutdown so they can move forward with integration of Google Voice and Hangouts so you should have the same features natively once those applications stop working.

Dustin Schmidt so I'm guessing this means that GV will merge with Hangouts and allow for texting via the new Hangouts?

Jason Elwart You can already text (SMS) through hangouts. I'm just waiting for the VOIP integration.

Jason Elwart I know that Google already put out Voice calls within the iOS app (http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/18/4853956/voice-calling-comes-to-google-hangouts-for-ios).

 

If I remember correctly Google has said that this year the Android app will get it, I'll have to dig up that story later... With that being said in KitKat texts are through Hangouts and I would hope MMS comes at some point too (MMS's from GV that is).

Hadn't heard officially that Google was dumping XMPP but everyone was guessing it. Too bad, it's an interesting protocol. Also, I really hate that Hangouts UI.

Obihai announced the GV will no longer support XMPP after May 2014 , In the meantime their Android app will allow VOIP callling via their ObiTalk devices.  http://blog.obihai.com/2013/10/important-message-about-google-voice.html

you can also try viber. not sure if it works without a phone # but you could use your google voice # as the registration #.

+mike wendel and Jungle Boogie does viber work for outbound calls or do they have to have Viber for me to call them?
