G+_Michael Leone
You want to do SMB sharing across the Internet? That's scary ... The exact ports should be listed on samba.org. Probably port 445.
G+_Taylor Graham
That is scary. You should use a VPN.
G+_Talky
For now porting it is my first priority, security will be a bonus
G+_Taylor Graham
Welp, good luck and god speed. With a VPN, you wouldn't have to bother opening any ports. One of twits sponsors (proXPN) offers a turn-key, no setup required VPN solution. Though there might be better services out there.

G+_Michael Leone
All VPNs are somewhat slower, because all traffic is encrypted, and therefore (more) secure. Leaving the well-known SMB ports open to the outside world is a Bad Idea. But if you don't mind making it easier for your machine to be compromised, that's up to you ... G+_Talky
I have no idea how to set up a vpn.Im using ubuntu server, can anyone help
G+_Brandon Ingli
Talky . VPNs are setup via the router. If your router supports it, you will have to set it up there and find your external ip (which may change periodically) to use it. Note: you cannot vpn to your own network while on your own network :)
