G+_Eddie Foy
smb is easier to set up. Does windows (clients) even support nfs out of the box?

G+_Eddie Foy
I'd opt for Samba for its ease, but want to hear other opinions.
G+_Jason Marsh
You could use either, but I know we have some storage knurds here that will want to know the following... What's the purpose and environment? (home/SOHO vs. enterprise network, private vs. public network, types of clients that will connect, expected throughput, etc.)
G+_Travis Hershberger
Easy, both! Linux will work with NFS easier/better than SMB, while Windows works best with SMB (only quite poorly does it support NFS.) Most file servers will support both simultaneously, so why choose? G+_Michael Heinz
Travis has it right. Windows and Macs have limited support for NFS, but Linux prefers it.
