G+_Storm Mcleod
Greetings Know How crowd. I had a interesting thought, with padre's talking about there sponsor digitalocean and minecraft server. Err i have something better! well I say MUDS multi-user dungeons, telenet based bbs style game! back in the day hosting for these was $12 for 40megs ram, 50meg storage. Thinking about it $5 get me 512meg ram, 20gb storage, 1tb transfer. That would be epic for a MUD. Would it be possible to load this up on digitalocean? Other option might be very awesome is IRC server? i know Twit has there own, but might get myself one as well. i think this would be awesome to see these setup on a cheap hosting! If i get around to this I will pass it along here. Alright hope everyone has good happy know hole filling time!
G+_Ben Reese
I know nothing about MUD games, but I don't see why it couldn't work. The $5/mo deal at Digital Ocean is for a Linux-based server, so you'd need a MUD that ran on Linux.
G+_Jason Granzow
There are MUD's that run on linux. I ran one about 7 years ago. I would say that this would make a better raspberryPi project. It would pay itself off in 7 months and sip power. plus the Pi is WAY overkill for a MUD and IRC chat so you won't have any performance issues. G+_Ben Reese
Jason Granzow I agree, but when the novelty runs out in 2 weeks you're out $40+ with a Pi and $0 with Digital Ocean since you've got a $10 credit from Know How ?
G+_Jason Granzow
Ben Reese Good point, I look at the Pi as something that can be recycled once one becomes bored with it. More of an investment if you will. (Both could be considered that though) Thanks for reminding me about the $10 credit. That makes it ~9 months to pay off. G+_James Berry
I play on a Wheel of Time MUD and have put up a code base (written in C) on koding.com. Koding.com runs Linux and has an usable free option. Mostly it seems to be space management and memory to handle pfile login activity
G+_Storm Mcleod
Most definitely would say rasp pi would be awesome for a MUD platform. Though getting hosting would be ideal for a few reasons on hosting out to the public. I wouldn't spend money during the development of the mud if you are wanting to make it custom. I use hosting for websites as that it open to public but develop local. Great to have many options for fun geekness!
