G+_Jason Brown
The last thing I want to do is start anything political on here. But the pragmatist in me has to bring up the fact that now would be a good time to buy up all those cheap Arduino knockoffs from China, before the tariffs start kicking in. G+_Rickbearcat
What is political about buying something while it is still in the marketplace? That is just being capitalistic.
G+_Paul Hutchinson
Rickbearcat AFAIK They aren't being removed from the marketplace. The tariff's just add 10% to the price, making them about 3.6 times cheaper than genuine units, without the tariff they are about 4 times cheaper. G+_Jason Brown
Oh Paul, you and your math. I'm a cheap skate, every penny counts
G+_Rickbearcat
Paul Hutchinson Hey, cheaper is cheaper, right?
G+_Paul Hutchinson
Jason Brown Rickbearcat It seems you both got sidetracked by the simple grocery store arithmetic, it's too simple to call it math :-) and missed the main point. To repeat the main point of my post, the cheap clones aren't being removed from the marketplace.
G+_Jason Brown
No confusion or sidetracking here. A $0.70 markup per unit is significant to some of us, that's all. Especially for a lot of the teachers here that might be considering ordering them in bulk for their students. I realize that doesn't seem like a lot of money. But it is for some of us. G+_Black Merc
Noob question: is it any cheaper to build it yourself... The hole thing is open source right? Shape the board how you like.
G+_Paul Hutchinson
Probably not cheaper to build it yourself than the $4.50 clones because the cost of the components in single piece quantities.
G+_Black Merc
Paul Hutchinson then could a local(states based) co. build in large enough volume? We have the technology(we made the technology).
G+_Paul Hutchinson
Jason Brown I have not said anything that should be construed as trying to discourage anyone from saving money. Absolutely, if anyone wants to save 10% vs. the price in a couple months by stocking up now, go for it. The first, and main point, was to correct the first reply's incorrect implication that they where being removed from the market. Then I gave an example of the before and after tariff pricing for comparison so that others can more easily decide if stocking up is worthwhile. G+_Paul Hutchinson
Black Merc Sure but the labor and overhead costs make it unlikely a US based company could compete on price even with a 10% tariff. This especially applies when you consider that buying from China will always avoid local sales taxes. Buying from a US company will soon almost always mean you pay local sales taxes. So for most consumers paying the tariff on the Chinese clone will still be cheaper.
