So I 've accepted that my wife will probably never be okay with us getting a 3D printer

So I've accepted that my wife will probably never be okay with us getting a 3D printer. That said, can anyone recommend a service that balances cost and quality well for print job. I'm just always so leary spending any money online. Or is this just one of those things where I'm better off getting a printer if I do more than a few projects, and not bother with any other options.

I'm just getting so jealous of all the projects I see in here. The best I can do now is mutilate a spice jar, for a janky security camera.?

It all depends on how much printing you think you'd do. I think you know darn well that once you start printing, you'll never stop... lol... So you need to find a few services (Shapeways is one...) and compare costs... then try to estimate how much you'd use the service (or how much you want to print). At some point you will probably pass the point where you should have gotten a printer. MonoPrice has the Maker Select for $299. They always have specials where they may drop the price to $279 or so... I've seen them sell refurbs for as low as $259.

So figure out how much you want to do and go from there...

That's where research comes in... take some time to get recommendations, go to forums and read posts from people. Thingiverse has forums, and there are other 3D printer web sites out there. 3D Printer Nerd has good review videos.

And as with any tech device, find out how to fix any issues that come along, as you know there will be. I spent a few months researching 3D printers and I am VERY happy with my Maker Select Plus. Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ loves his Maker Select, from what he says on the shows.

Research, research, research...

I was lucky in that I am an IT guy for a school department, so I had 4 printers at my disposal. The problem was that they all seemed to go down all the time, so I bit the bullet and bought a Maker Select Plus. I think I've printed more on this thing since I got it in May than anything the school printed on their 4 printers this past school year. They have 2 MakerBots and 2 SolidDoodle printers. The Tech teacher saw mine, now he wants some for his class (and the enclosure I built... lol)
