G+_Jason Brown
My wife gave me to the go ahead to start shopping around for a new laptop. I confess, I know very little about spec'ing out a machine anymore. Aside from a pretty disappointing Inspiron, I've always just Frankensteined old hardware together from my employer's recycle pile. We're going with a shared device this time, so we can get something a little nicer. It needs to be a gaming machine, so the graphics card needs to be a bit future proof (unless it's upgradable down the road). Can anyone offer some guidance? There's just too much variety. I'm so afraid I'm going to end up throwing money at another piece of junk. Budget-wise, we're looking in the 1000-1200 range.
G+_Seth Leedy
Lots of choices in websites that offer custom machines, even laptops. Search “custom laptop gaming" in Google. Even rent to own, to try them out: http://www.nocompromisegaming.com/products/laptops.html
G+_Rickbearcat
Try Woot.com, under electronics> laptops. There are some great deals for refurbished and or out of box returns for Omen or HP gaming laptops with 1050-1060-1070 or AMD graphics cards from $600 to $1200 that would normally go for a third more new. G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Check out the Know-How "Back To School" episodes. I think Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ went over a bunch of notebooks, a few that were "game worthy"...
G+_Jason Brown
Thanks guys, appreciate the help! I'll check those out.
G+_Scott Dible
Jason Brown Gaming is rather generic... what type of games do you play? It's tougher to find upgrade-able graphics in a laptop. Do you game on the go, or could you consider external graphics? (Although that may blow your budget)
G+_Jason Brown
So I saw the one with the gaming laptop. It seemed odd that it was still using DDR2 memory. I suppose that's a cost saving measure, but isn't that a bit dated? I'm not a hardware guy, so I don't really know for sure. But should I shoot for something newer? G+_Jason Brown
Scott Dible I'm working with Batman Arkham Knight, No Man's Sky, etc. I'm not worried about upgrading if it is too cumbersome. I game at home. But this will be a shared machine for her photos/surfing/etc. What kind of external graphics options did you have in mind? I didn't know that was an option. G+_Rickbearcat
Jason Brown You do not want to go with DDR2/DDR3 RAM memory. DDR4 is where it's at right now.
G+_Jason Brown
Thanks Rickbearcat. I was thinking that. The weird thing is that the laptop says it's running DDR4 on Acer's site. So Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ must have misspoken on the show and mistyped on the show notes.
G+_Rickbearcat
Jason Brown That is correct. Fr. Robert did misspeak. No modern laptop has DDR2 memory. I hope that you found something that fits your needs for now and into the future. My Dell XPS (which has an i5 also) has served me well for the past 7 years (and still going) and the Acer he recommended also seems well built for the long haul too.
