G+_Jason Brown
I'm setting up a game server for 7 Days to Die in my home. Would there be a noticeable difference in the quality of the connection if I used a VPN instead of just port forwarding?
G+_Travis Hershberger
A VPN will be slower than just Port forwarding. Of course, if you want to keep it private, a VPN is the way to go.
G+_Jason Brown
I'm sure it'll be slower. But if I only have 1-2 people on at any given time, do you think they would notice? ...and as I'm typing this, I realize I could just go test it out since I already have everything in place to make it happen anyway. Derp. I guess it's gotten to the point where I ponder something, then ask, "what would the KITAs do?" I just don't want to keep adding ports to forward, for this or that, if I can help it. G+_Jason Brown
Plus I love the idea of having an encrypted tunnel, in case 7 Days to Die has some unknown exploit. It's in Alpha still, so I'm sure there's bound to be something.
G+_Travis Hershberger
I use Zetotier for my VPN. Makes it so much easier that going the DIY route spent make sense to me anymore. I recently started running a Minecraft server, but it's behind a VyOS software router, and no VPN. It's been hard to invite more people if I had to walk them all through setting up a VPN first. G+_Jason Brown
It'd be for a friend down the road and my nephew in law. I'd set it up for my friend and my nephew is saavy enough. If it were a load of people then I'd probably just use port forwarding. I'm using PiVPN on my Pi3, so setup is a snap.
G+_Ben Reese
Travis Hershberger so, I have a lot of questions and research for ZeroTier. Like, is the encryption as strong as what is used for OpenVPN? how is data routed? Through their servers? I don't consider OpenVPN difficult to setup anymore and the only "difficult" part is port forwarding. ZeroTier definitely sounds convenient, though, if it's secure. G+_Travis Hershberger
I forget what the default encryption is in Zerotier, I'm thinking it's a 256bit ecleptic curve of some sort, so should be plenty strong. Zerotier remains so cheap because they don't route data through their servers at all. Think of their server like a connection broker with the endpoints communicating directly. G+_Ben Tyger
I really depends on the game. If the game is an FPS or some other type of 'twich' game, the latency a VPN my induce may make the game sub-optimal.
