G+_Brian B
Ok thought I would go to the community with this question. I am looking to add mobile WIFI to my vehicle. Several reasons, but main one is so I can say I did it...:) I have looked at the cradlepoint devices and like the product but not the price. Anyone got any ideas on hardware and mobile plans? Would like an unlimited data plan. Would also like the ability to hardwire some devices into the switch.
G+_Ben Yanke
Depending on your usage and coverage, t-mobile's 5gb / mo might work for only $
G+_Ben Yanke
And it's my understanding that cradle point is probably your best bet.
G+_Black Merc
USB Sprint dongle + USB enabled ddwrt router...
G+_Lauren Glenn
T-Mobile. If you run over, they'll just throttle you and their coverage is pretty good (roaming is great).
G+_Eddie Foy
I'm testing out Google's Project Fi. Plan seems cool; pay for what you use $10 a gig (even pro-rated to sub-Gig rates). Sprint & t-mobile are used. But it would be a phone as a hotspot; not exactly what ya looking for. Really depends on how many devices and data needs. Now I gotta ask, just a system for the family drives or some cool-assed project?
G+_Brian B
I think its cool...Stream Facebook Live and hook up a amazon dot with possible VPN back to my house so I can control my home automation from my car.....Yes I know why oh why would anyone want to do something like that... G+_Brian B
My ship date for the dot is not till June so thought I might and try to get some of this set up before that. I also have a few beacons that are wifi enabled that I would.love to work into my overcomplicated mobile network
G+_Brian B
The USB dongle on a ddwrt router sounds intriguing. I have a few routers around but not sure they take a USB 4g stick
G+_Eddie Foy
Hak5's WiFi Pineapples usually work well with the USB dongles.
G+_Ben Reese
WiFi Pineapple would probably be perfect for this. Not sure how intuitive the settings are, but it has VPN support built-in.
G+_Rud Dog
Eddie Foy Went with the Google Fi plan 20 dollars a month plus $10.00/1GB data with taxes runs about 34.00 dollars a month. If you don't all use your data they deduct unused amt from your upcoming bill. Since I used between 150MB and 200MB my bill was around 24.00 dollars. G+_Michael Young
I thought about doing something similar, however ultimately just bought a Mifi and left it in the car. Sometimes simple is better.
G+_Brian B
My other reason for overcomplicating the mobile network was that if all fails....or I lose interest...I could always take the cellular device into my home and hook it up as additional bandwidth or failover on my Ubiquiti ER8 Pro
G+_Ben Reese
Could probably use an Android device with tethering then also connect a Bluetooth ODB2 adapter with Torque Pro.
G+_Jeff Brand
I've suggested these before.. http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-MR3040-Wireless-Portable-Compatible/dp/B0088PPFP4 Just add USB 4G. This model includes a battery internally. Runs OpenWRT, not sure about ddwrt.

G+_Brian B
Thanks for showcasing this on the knowhow show. I'll post what I end up doing but I'm leaning toward the latest and greatest device by mofinetworks.
