G+_Brian B
So I have a new project I'm trying to build. I have a piece of property that I infrequently visit in a small mountain town of Arizona. I want to install 2 or 3 cameras to monitor the property and take in the scenery. DSL is the best internet possible and there are frequent power outages. I am thinking about the following setup: - 2-3 IP cameras (I have HIKVISION at my current home and they seem to work great) - Cellular access point (i just ordered a MOFI Networks device to try on my prototype, looked at cradlepoints, but liked the MOFI Network price) - Ubiquiti Edgerouter POE - overkill but I have an edgerouter pro in the house so I am familiar with the product - QNAP NAS -I have not made a decision on a model but leaning toward a 4 bay with SSD's for redundancy and uptime. I also run QNAP in my home so once again familiar with it. - Battery/Surge protector So here are my questions: 1. I want to record locally and then login when i need too and I would like to get low res snapshots on an interval from the system. Anyone have any ideas on how to do this? I will only have the NAS and could maybe build something on a PI? 2. Reliability and Recovery - Even though I have the battery backup, it may not be serviced for years? Should I even do a battery backup? Anyone familiar with the net restart devices out there? Any thoughts on how I can build in redundancy or reliability into the design. Appreciate the comments and insights.
G+_Jason Perry
If there are frequent power outages, is solar a consideration? Some camera's have a SD card built in so you can save locally as well as to a networked source. I would also look at the software that comes with the camera. You may not need a NAS, unless you are after that level of reliability. How far apart are the properties?
G+_Brian B
About 1300 miles...solar is an option ....I'm concerned about maintenance. I forgot to mention all this equipment will be in non conditioned space
G+_Ben Reese
I'll preface by saying I don't have any experience with any of these, but I'll give my opinion anyhow ? I know the Synology NAS boxes have some surveillance software available that's supposed to be pretty good. Looks like it works with HIKVISION cameras too: https://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?t=90036 I like that you're not skimping on the router. I've not used the Ubiquiti routers, but love their APs. Redundancy in Internet access is a good idea. Redundancy in data is also a good idea. Maybe have an hourly or daily process to copy the important data to a remote NAS? Or even to an online backup service. I'm guessing the footage isn't super important until you actually need it... I would think backup power is important for video surveillance. If you have frequent brown-out/black-outs, it's probably even more important for data integrity. I'm sure both QNAP and Synology have designed for that, but its not worth risking.
G+_Brian B
I guess I'm not so concerned about losing video, but more so with the system coming back up without user intervention
G+_Jason Perry
If your timeline isn't that tight I would test whatever setup you come up with locally to see how it behaves before moving it to the final location. My biggest worry in your case would be how the equipment shuts down. If you have frequent brown out or black outs that will take a toll on the equipment and it will just stop one day. I don't have experience with solar but I did grow up in the middle of no where and our house was the last one on the power line, spikes and dips in power have killed a few routers and computers in the last 5 to 10 years. G+_Eddie Foy
With no AC, I'd opt for old cellphones or the Pi route. (maybe even underclock the pi to help) and flash storage (SSD, thumb drives, etc) Power outages, how long they last for? You could parallel extra batteries to a UPS for longer run time (NOT more wattage/current draw) A bit kuldgey. Solar would be nice with a reverse UPS. And of course you will have to open up a port or bunch on the router to 'get in' Me? I'd opt for a router you can config from a command line/ssh. Then just toss the sshd up in the 49000's, and then log in and open ports you need when you need them.

G+_Brian B
Anyone have any experience with IP based outlets. This seems like it may give me some ability to reset equipment. http://www.amazon.com/3Gstore-Remote-Power-IP-Switch/dp/B00LLVQ9OI/ref=pd_sim_sbs_147_5?ie=UTF8&dpID=411pUx4EsGL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=0V3B7TH80WXKT8VAB6AH
G+_Ben Reese
That's not quite the right Tinkernut? though. Maybe an old G+ profile?
G+_martin rednal
I use hikvisions with built in SD card, powered via a dlink poe smart switch. Any devices powered by the switch can be powered off/on via switch web interface. I would stick with hiks as maybe more reliable that a heath robinson pi job. I use mikrotik for routing which will also accept a mobile dongle although it something I've never tried. This is also powered via the Poe switch. Storage wise I got about a weeks worth of video with record on movement. Now swapped for 128gb sdcards so should be double.? Any questions give me a shout
