G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
I have two older desktops that my mom gave me a few weeks ago. They are custom built, basic boxes. both use dual core Athlon x2 2.7ghz and 4gb of ram, upgradable to 8gb max. My question is would it be worth adding a newer graphics card and/or max out the ram to play games through steam like call of duty or should I upgrade to something newer? G+_Joshua Hamlett
You will definitely need to put in a new graphics card in order to do any gaming. However, an Athlon x2 is pretty basic by today's standards, so I would see if I could upgrade that to maybe a Phenom II X4 before investing in any RAM, which won't speed it up any. G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
I think both boards are am2+ and If I remember correctly there is a phenom ll x4 in that socket. I don't really have a use for them so I figured I'd try to come up with something. I mean who turns down free hardware? Lol.
G+_Paul Simard
I'd suggest upgrading memory and storage. Gives you two adequate media servers on the cheap.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Paul Simard i thought about that but i already have a server that stores and streams my media that i'm upgrading. Plus the athlon cpu's are 95w. it probably wont get any where near that but i'm still a little paranoid.
G+_Jamie Campbell
If you decide not to use them for gaming, consider using one as an Intrusion Detection System (see Father Robert's comments about using taps) and maybe the other as an Asterisk server. G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Jamie Campbell? that's actually a good idea. I'm working on a parts list for a pfsense box and from my understanding running snort is an intrusion detection. In case either of these systems can't handle gaming I would like to do and upgrade it later, what's a graphics card that is a good budget card? I saw a few budget builds and they used gtx 750 ti cards and Radeon cards (forgot which one exactly). Both using pci express 3.0 and 2gb. Can you use amd cpu with nvidia cards? G+_Joshua Hamlett
Yes, NVidia GPU's and AMD CPU's are compatible with each other.
