Good evening, or morning, fellow know howers. I got home this morning after another "day" of the shift and saw my present from santa (that's what my stepmother says.although she had my gift shipped to my house.lol). Anyways, after about 15 minutes I had a pfsense box built. Intel d2500cce motherboard, 4 gb of 204 pin ddr3 sodimm 1333mhz ram i scavenged from my mac mini, a 80watt Pico psu, and 64gb Samsung ssd I bought from eBay a few years ago and a m350 case. Now just to install pfsense and install it into my network. That, I'll leave for new years day.

Newegg had a barebones that was slightly bigger than this case but otherwise same specs except adding hdmi and Broadcom lan. Everything I read said Intel nics were the best. So for the same price I got this (minus ssd and ram). I'm still learning networking and pfsense so I'm not too sure what that is. Right now I have added(but not setup)snort,Antivirus, bandwidthd, stunnel and a few other packages. I just added it about an hour ago.?

That barebones is likely the one I'm using - they were on sale just after the new Atom CPU's came out. I was running a MicroATX tower and wanted lower power usage.

My pfSense + Cable Modem is ~32W (about 12W is the modem).

I'm running softflowd (lets you get deep network statistics) and APCUPSd (so it can talk to the UPS and auto shutdown).

I also have some custom Cron jobs that try to detect when the connection is down for a while and reboot as an attempt to restore the link.

It is the "OEM production" brand, but it actually says Minix on the front. I just checked my 2013 order history to be sure :-)

Cron lets you run scheduled tasks - scripts that do maintenance or handle recurring activities. I found and modified one to get the reboot to work as I wanted. It is a great help when I'm out of town and there is no one home to poke at network stuff so I can get to my resources at the house in the event of a connection problem.

Since the update from Brighthouse to 150MBps it's been more reliable as well.

I'm seen them more for untangle.the few of sense boxes I saw people were complaining . probably 64bit. I'll have to add cron jobs to the list of things to look into. I don't travel much between work and school but some times things go down while I'm not home I'd like to know about it. I'd love to have 150.
