G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
I just want to make sure I didn't miss anything. My roommate has a HP core2duo HP laptop and is having problems getting online some times. I ch cked and he has the latest WiFi driver from HP. The network run down is a cable modem to a pfsense box and from there to the wan port on an Asus rt-n16. All if my gear(win7 laptop, android phones and tablets, Mac mini) all work fine with the rt-n16 or the rt-n66 I had in so my thought is it's his laptop. When the rt-n66 was used I disabled 5ghz since nothing I have used 5ghz. Seem right or did I miss something?
G+_Timothy Hamlett
Does it work via LAN?
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Haven't tried that yet. I don't really want him in my room.lol.
G+_Wayne Black
Hmm, a lot of words there I don't understand, but have you tried turning everything off and back on starting at the cable modem? Kind of gets the ducks all back in line so to speak. Worked for a friend when the wifi showed up fine, but Windows couldn't connect to the internet. G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
It connects to the web but drops service. Shows connected to the router just no internet. I've turned everything off for about 20 minutes when I moved all the gear around.
G+_Wayne Black
Try removing all the wireless networks in the Windows laptop under "Manage Wireless Networks" including yours and do a re connect with proper password. I would also check the channel in Device Manager. If all else fails, see if you can borrow a usb wifi adapter and try that. Trying to do all this from memory. I'm on a Mac now. G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
We both work nights so when I get home I'll let him know when he gets off. I wish I could go all Mac/Linux. Unfortunately some if my classes need windows. And then there's gaming too.
G+_Wayne Black
I also just had another thought. If it's been awhile since os was loaded on the laptop, run Windows System File checker. DLL files can get corrupted and kind of work, but don't.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Definitely didn't think of that. I'll try that too.
G+_Timothy Hamlett
Sometimes getting the driver from the manufacturer of the wifi card helps sometimes too On my dell latitude for some reason, if I go with the driver from Windows or Dell, the card acts funny. I installed the driver from Intel, and it works like a charm.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
I'll have to find out who makes it and let him know.
G+_Ben Reese
Does his laptop work on other networks? Can he ping Google? How about 4.4.4.4? It could be that he has a static DNS server set in his network settings.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
I'm not sure about connecting to other networks. Haven't tried to ping anything. Also didn't check any settings. I guess there's a lot I missed.
G+_Jacob Alvarez
Are you using 2.4 hz or 5 hz, some routers have both. 5 hz is really bad. Also, maybe there are too many walls in between you guys. Maybe a range extender would be good for you!
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
2.4ghz. 5ghz is disabled. Its one wall.lol. and I used the other router in the living room as and extender for the ps3 and fire stick although they didntbreally need it. It was more for having WiFi on the porch
