G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Are there any CPU and HDD tests/stress tests that can be booted from a USB drive similar to memtest? When I searched I got results for windows.
G+_Taylor Graham
install linux on flash drive, boot it, run fsck (like chkdsk). You can also install prime95 on your installation if you'd like to stress-test a cpu. Use something like puppy linux if you want it to be small. G+_Joe Phelps
Most HD manufacturers have drive test ISOs.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Does prime work with Linux? Mainly need HDD tests and I'll be installing freenas. I saw somewhere that unraid does preclear, not sure what that is/does but the free version only does 3 drives and I'll be using 4.
G+_Taylor Graham
There's probably a butt ton of linux utilities for both cpu and hard drive tests, im sure you can find more. if you install linux on a flash drive and enable persistence, you can install whatever you want and it will remain after reboots. Prime95 does in fact run on linux. For drive testing, you can use smart in freenas as well. make sure you configure an email and turn on smart reporting, its great. It'll let you know when a drive has dropped out of the array, reaches high temp, etc. There are also some smart commands you can run from the shell to test your drives, check the freenas forums for info (or google). G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
I'll have to search more. I didn't know that about prime. I read the burn in test post on the freenas forums but didn't give any smart commands. I'll have to go look again after work.
G+_Taylor Graham
You can also use dd in freenas to test the read/write speed of your array. Google that and you'll probably find the thread on the forums. You can use it to write an empty file of a user defined size to the array, so if you wanted to see how your nas performs when writing a huge file, thats an option. Id tell you the smart commands but i never remember then myself. I always just look them up.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
I know at least one drive is currently acting up since I can hear it spin up and down. I need to see which one and test it and the other 3 by themselves so I know which,if any, can be used in my desktop. I'll have to do the dd test when the reds come in. G+_Taylor Graham
i think you can see what drives are sleeping, how long they've been asleep/awake, etc. There's a resource monitor style tab in freenas, i think that's where that info is. I think you can also get it with smart commands in the shell. If the drive has bad sectors/isnt functioning, smart will let you know. Just make sure its on (i think it is by default). You'll also see "array status: degraded" in the storage tab if a drive has failed.
G+_Tyler Smith
Seatools made by seagate has worked for me in the past, it is bootable and works on all hard drives not just seagate.
G+_Taylor Graham
I've had a few Seagate drives that smart reported as dead (lots and lots of bad sectors), but seatools reported them as fine. I only ever ran it because I had to in order to get an rma. But yeah, for what is worth.
G+_John Mink
I don't see why Spinrite (of GRC) wouldn't be bootable on a thumb drive... just don't expect it to be quick :p but it looks like Taylor Graham?? has pretty much taken care of you! Let us know what you end up putting on the drive! Also, are you considering multiboot for the thumb drive??
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
John Mink its just going to be whatever I need to run the tests. If I need more than one its fine.I have a bunch just collecting dust so I can put them to use. I'm going to turn the server on when I get home and it has freenas already so I try smart and the dd commands. I'll make a Linux USB to try those tests tomorrow after work. G+_Kia Y
Use xboot to create bootable USB t then you can run many utilities including spinrite, trinity rescue package, or multiple Linux distro
G+_Jeff Brand
https://www.ultimatebootcd.com The image can be put on a USB stick, something I plan to do within the month. Though it says it's compatible with Windows, it's mostly system agnostic. It uses FreeDOS for command line utilities, and bare bones Linux installs for those tools. There are a variety of options under each category you're looking for, and a whole lot more. I've used this tool for years and still haven't used most of the tools available. There are some gems in there, for sure.
