G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ? with the car hack, most likely they are moving the steering wheel because of an electric "power steering" setup. A lot of cars use just electric motors to help. Also,I think it was in security now but you can download the update yourself and use a USB drive. And you can get the update over http....
G+_Steve C
Just turn off the cellphone connecting it to the hackers. Problem solved!
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Its not a sprint phone exactly.more like a CDMA chip used with sprint services. Which is funny in itself since spring is the att of CDMA,bad services, bad customer service.
G+_610GARAGE
You are correct. Electric steering is controlled by the computer. Hydraulic power steering is controlled via a good old fashioned shaft. It is also designed to continue to work without hydraulic power. Ahh, the good old days. When people actually thought about what happens when something breaks. G+_Steve C
If the phone can't be turned off you can always cancel the Sprint service or just stop paying for it.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
610bob I love my 93 civic. No power anything except the motor and radio. No power steering. Doesn't even need it. I have seen that the s2000 as well as the MRs(newest mr2) also has electric assist. Im not a fan. But then again automatic transmissions annoy me
G+_610GARAGE
Adam EL-Idrissi I know what you mean. I have a 94 jeep wrangler. Zipper windows, manual transmission, brealy a radio, no a/c (that one may change). The only computer onboard is for fuel injection and that's coming out when I swap out my engine for a 4 cylinder diesal commins. Though, I do like my power steering and brakes. But I also have 31" tires. :)
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
610bob oh yeah, forgot about the ecu.haha. if I could run carbs, with little work,I would. Yeah PS is needed for those.haha
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Steve C I'm not 100% sure how it is setup but there is NO phone in the car except the drivers and passengers. The service COULD but turned off but no one wants to spend that money in a car with all these "features" and not be able to use them. I mean if you can afford a 787,you wouldn't just stare at it at a hangar would you?
G+_Eddie Foy
610bob "electric" power steering, when the motor goes out, the car still steers. This is kinda mandated. Just like the old hydraulic, if the pump fails or the belt snaps, its still steerable. (granted at a much greater effort)
G+_Steve C
Adam, look at it this way, if they can operate the brakes, steering, etc. remotely they can also unlock it to rob you! Like I said, I'd disable the Sprint service.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
And you would think people would do that. Don't get.me wrong,I agree that having it like it is is bad but people like convenience and care less and less about security. This is actually a sprint/Chrysler problem than car owner. If they would just all get together and have a lawsuit.....
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Steve C You can't disable the Sprint service. It's built into the vehicle. Even if you don't subscribe, the interface is still on. (Because they want to be able to turn on the service the moment you call or accept terms on the head unit.) G+_Bradley Wright
It seems to me that the prime mitigating factor in the severity of this vulnerability is that the car must be in an area where there is connectivity to the Sprint network for it to be exploited:-). G+_610GARAGE
Eddie Foy I always heard that it was strictly drive by wire. So I decided to look at my moms car, and your right. There is still a steering wheel shaft.
G+_Bradley Wright
610bob? electric power steering isn't truly all that new. I still own a 1988 Subaru xt6 that has it. I wish the a/c still worked as well as the power steering.
