G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Does anyone have recommendations for an online training for SQL server 2012? Just started this class and looking for something to supplement with it.
G+_Joshua Delaughter
https://www.microsoftvirtualacademy.com/search/SearchResults.aspx?q=Sql Great stuff here, the jumpstart ones in particular are really good
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Thank you. I'll have to look at that later.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Sam 011100110110000101101101 I'll have to check on the training. I've had 3 different offerings for them for the 3 classes I took. Got a lot of good software from them.
G+_Joshua Delaughter
Will you be focusing on administration (DBA) work, or more BI/App Dev?
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Its more of an intro course.
G+_Eddie Foy
Not to hijack, but how much does MS-SQL differ from MySQL?
G+_Joshua Delaughter
About 3 grand. ;) They both follow the ANSI standards for the core set of syntax. I think it's just a matter of learning those little differences in syntax when you get outside of basic queries.
G+_Eddie Foy
So its the typical MS perversion of standards.
G+_Joshua Delaughter
Haha yup, they "make it better"
G+_Joshua Delaughter
Sam 011100110110000101101101 unfortunately I haven't got to use MySQL very much, my last two enterprise employers only ever used MS SQL. I've played around with MySQL for a few wikis. projects. MS SQL is very robust, and while daunting at first, one you learn it, it's not difficult. G+_Eddie Foy
I'd just dabbled with SQL. It seems very heavy "L" based.
G+_Joshua Delaughter
"L" based?
G+_Eddie Foy
Language. Seems more a language then a application.
G+_Joshua Delaughter
Ah okay, but I think with SQL, you really want the application to get out of the way, the data manipulation and retrieval is the real value
G+_Ben Reese
I started as a SQL Server DBA a couple months ago. If you're in a Microsoft environment, SQL Server has a ton of support and the tools make the product. SQL Server Management Studio, Reporting Services, Integration Services... It's nice to have everything right out of the box. SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle... Mostly just a matter of work environment and preferences. Anyhow about education... Definitely check Dreamspark but you'll probably need a .edu email address. I took a few classes through New Horizon last month and got a few links from the instructors, so I'll share those here in a bit.
