G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
I was about to order a synology ds414+ but found a ds412+ that practically new for half price. I checked synology's site and the 214 has updates for DSM 5.2 as new as 9/7/2015. My question is will the 214 being sata 2 and my WD reds being sata 3 will the sata be a bottleneck? I'll have it setup in either raid 5 or 10 and mostly for media storage and backups. I have plex server on a PC that will be getting the data from the nas to stream it over the network. Since the 214 has dual gig e ports would teaming help with speeds if sata 2 is the bottleneck?
G+_Travis Hershberger
No. SATA2 is already faster than gigabit ethernet. It's Gigabit, not gigabyte, so it's really 1000/8 or 125 Megabytes a second. After overhead you'll do well to get 110MB/s in the real world. SATA2 is 300MB/s (I think, haven't looked it up in years, might be 150MB/s.) Either way a single SATA2 port is faster than a single gigabit network connection. If we talk actual streaming throughput of the hard drives it just gets even worse. Also, teaming isn't going to help with speeds at all unless you also have a teamed connection on the other end. It would make managing the connection(s) easier to get full speed out of more than one gigabit client as you won't have to connect each one to a different IP on the NAS. I do use teaming at work to good effect, but it's mostly to stack switches. That way I can run a manual backup of a computer in the middle of the day and not get a bunch of whiny users.
