I've got some extra wood from a project I did a few months ago and I was thinking about building my own server rack. I found this(Reliable Hardware Company RH-12-SRR-A 12U, Full Hole 12 Space Rack Rail Pair https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JQYV8BQ/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_wTwwwbWMC7D8S) after some Google searching that people used for their own. My question is for a couple 2u and 4u cases with no more than 2 hard drives,a modem and a 1u half depth case for pfsense, what would be the best method of installing these and what size wood to use? Almost every case I've looked at getting is 19" and under depth wise and I'm not sure about getting rails(or how they would be installed if I got them. Maybe some 2x4s and bolts?fine thread screws? I also plan on making a shelf above those for the printer and another for a monitor and keyboard. Overall height will be less than 40" and the stand "19 inch" for rack mount gear.

I used them for my racks.  but I welded up 1/2 square tubing. And bolted them to the welded frame.

The screw pitch is 10-32.  The hole spacing is NOT 100 symmetric, there are 2 patterns.

You will want rear or mid support for heavier units.

2x4s sound overkill and bulky  1x2s would work nicer I think.  Then some 1/4" hardwood plywood for the sides.

I've looked into a similar setup, and I'd suggest a welded steel setup like Eddie Foy has done. What's that? Oh, you don't weld; there's a welder who loves to tinker in your neighborhood, or perhaps a maker space close enough. Trade schools will sometimes take on small projects to give their students practice. You provide the material and design, they provide the welding skills. Perhaps you might even decide to take on a new hobby. You know you've always looked at welding with a keen interest ;)

Well I saw this (http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/d5/55/cc/d555ccff90ac4e720f8954a8ebe10f8e.jpg&imgrefurl=https://www.pinterest.com/shield007/server-racks/&h=314&w=236&tbnid=oCsbYRU5yItn-M:&docid=lg3EDCoevZvEhM&ei=neVZVuHHNIm2eIWdhXg&tbm=isch&client=ms-android-oneplus&ved=0ahUKEwihirC_07PJAhUJGx4KHYVOAQ8QMwgkKAMwAw) and a few diy builds on serve the home that I liked. I plan on an enclosed racj because some times my dog gets curious plus I can keep the noise under better control. I've got a friend that let mebuse his welder for my exhaust and I've got another friend that welds at the local shipyard so worse case he could do it,but it'd be like 5 minutes of work. I actually have to lack tables as side tables by my bed and I've seen the lack rack but the newer "models" apparently have abs plastic legs an I have a feeling the equipment would rip out.

If you go the welded route do NOT get your tube from Home Cheapo or Lowes (or the like)

Get it from a steel supply.   I bought through work and got 10 20-footers for $75.  (way more then what I needed for the project I got it for; not the racks. But so cheap I build everything with it.  Plus it bends nice too)
