G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
What's a good, affordable psu for a dual 1366 socket xeon build? Right now I'm looking at dual l5640s,USB thumb drive, ssd or two and no more than 4 hard drives(if any drives at all). haven't decided on a tower or 4u case yet so atx style psu would be preferred? G+_Eddie Foy
Been a while but PC Power and Cooling (now OCZ) had the best at the time. Quality components, good filtering and regulation.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Eddie Foy my problem is finding a reputable company that makes a psu with 24pin main and two 8pin cpu connectors. I did a quick search before this post and got some names I've never heard of our psu that $200+.
G+_Eddie Foy
Yup. Its a Xeon. Not a BestBuy special. For a critical system I'd put more into a quality PSU then a MoBo.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
One search mentioned the corsair ax860 but that's way more power than it'll use.
G+_Eddie Foy
Do pick a PSU that close with a ~30% (rated values are always 'generous') overhead. Pick one that's too big, and things can go a bit funky (not bad, just funky)
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
I figure around 400-500watts will work with all the drives and give some head room should I go to a CPU with a higher tdp. Just a dual CPU capable PSU with that "low" of power us difficult
G+_Steve Martin
You don't mention GPU(s), or are you using the onboard GPU from the motherboard? EVGA actually makes some pretty good PSU's for high end gaming rigs, that could suit your needs even if you are not building a gaming machine. G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Steve Martin onboard gpu. Maybe an older quadro for some VMs but that's not set in stone. I found a 680w supermicro and according 5o their site it'll work. I sent an email to confirm this
