G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Comcast now has browser pop ups to let you know when you're close,at or past your cap. I'm not even on their site and it shows up. Netflix now blocks VPN connections. My question is how can they know this? How does Comcast have this pop up on any site that's used? I like Padre went over the Comcast issue on twiet but I don't remember for sure.
G+_610GARAGE
I would say there doing deep packet inspection and injecting their pop up into your web pages. Which, by the way is not only a security risk, it's super sleazy. Does it happen you have you view a https page?
G+_Arcturus Lancaster
Rogers used to do it with DNS server. Would not see it when I changed my DNS to a more trustable one. Perhaps Comcast does the same
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
To be honest I don't remember what site it was exactly but I'm 98% sure it wasn't HTTPS, like a blog page or something. And my von wasn't on like usual since microshaft doesn't let you work on word or project with it on(the templates at least which I needed for an assignment). It's Comcast, the king if sleazy business. Is there something I can do to "block" this from happening?
G+_Michael Belew
Netflix blocks VPN from certain IP's some VPN's would work when I was working overseas.
G+_Ben Reese
Adam EL-Idrissi? I would expect it to only happen on non-HTTPS sites. Unless they have an option on your account settings to opt-out if the warning, I'd guess the only way to do so is with a VPN. Makes Time Warner look far less evil. Glad we have so much competition ? G+_Bill Crowe
Before our data cap was raised to 600GB/month, I hit my cap every month. I too am not sure exactly how Comcast inserts it's pop up. Since most of my data usage is steaming video on an AppleTV, I would rarely see the pop up, but I would experience buffering and stuttering in my videos. My guess is that Comcast was trying to insert it's pop up, but since my data usage was not through a browser, it would interrupt my streaming downloads. So either the pop up messed up my streams, or my Comcast service was wonky (hard to believe I know). It seems a bit silly that most high data usage is not in a browser (streaming and online backup), but that is how Comcast wants to warn you. G+_Travis Hershberger
Adam EL-Idrissi Short answer is, they don't. If you read up about the usage meters major ISPs have in place at dslreports.com, then you'll quickly realize that they just don't work. If you happen to be browsing SSL enabled sites, they're also doing a MITM attack to get you that information. If I thought you had a decent 2nd alternative for internet access, I'd tell you to switch. Sadly, we're almost all a captive audience currently. G+_Ben Tyger
The pop up may not be by website HTML injection. Check to make sure a Comcast browser plugin / extension has not been installed.
G+_Steve Martin
Adam EL-Idrissi I'm really curious what region/city you are in. As I said in the other thread, Comcast has never said anything to me and we've gone well over 250 and 600 GB regularly. I've never seen a popup either, but then I run my own DNS server, if that is how they are injecting.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Steve Martin that may be what's going in. I used to use opendns on my pfsense bix but it still had Comcast's listed. Have an Asus router right now so I can upgrade the router. I live in one of the 7 areas they like to try things on. Most people don't have caps at all with Comcast.
