G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Silly question: for a strictly torrent box, does cpu speed/# of cores do anything?
G+_Jason Eckelstafer
I have always ran mine inside of a virtual with low resources. It seemed like it was more tied to the bandwidth than the system's specs.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
I was assuming network and disk speeds would be biggest consideration. Got a dell fx160 I'm thinking about using instead of my Athlon x2 pc. 8w cpu vs 95w cpu. Haha
G+_Eddie Foy
Not really. The encryption can add a bit of CPU overhead. But I've run a console version on a Pi with no issue.
G+_John Mink
It depends on your network speed.... If you've got a Gb internet I'm extremely jealous! But also, yes, that will hut your CPU! If you've got 20Mb, then no, anything will be fine. What I have found to matter is the RAM (and to a certain extent the CPU) in your router. So if you have el cheapo router, you may see an improvement if you buy a nicer one! That said, you should be able to see the routet struggling... So I'd setup the box first & then only worry about the router if need be Happy Torrenting!
G+_John Mink
Adam EL-Idrissi? disk speed shouldn't matter as nothing is below a few hundred Mbps. So again, unless you have Gb to the house, you'll be fine!
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
John Mink I've got 75 down and a dual core atom pfsense box. I wish I had gb speeds! But $200/month for 2gb/100mb from Comcast is way too much for home use. I get a lot of Linux iso torrents and torrent the defcon media server. I'm not doing any encryption (other than vpn) so I think that won't be an issue.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
John Mink sata 1 is fine? Mostly have sata 3 and a couple of sata 2 ports but that's my freenas box. The torrent box will have a 60gb ssd(already owned) and won't really have anything stored on it.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Eddie Foy I was going to use one of my pi 2 and the pidrive but I am having issues getting transmission running on it for some reason.
G+_John Mink
Sata 1 is 1.5 Gb, shouldn't be a bottleneck on your system ;)
G+_John Mink
And the all important question.... What client/distro are you going with? ? :p
G+_John Mink
Also, why not just make a jail for torrenting on your FreeNAS box? Aren't those guys all about that?
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Debian os, transmission. Currently running on an atom 510 but that box is going in the spring cleaning pile.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Just saw a pico itx box for $80 shipped ready to go. Size plus even less power consumption has me curious that's why sata1 question. Haha
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
I've had issues with just about any jail and freenas. Plus I'm at 90% capacity and I'm getting more drives for the new box here shortly.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
I3 vs n40l. Same power draw but more flexibility and expansion
G+_Eddie Foy
I've never had a torrent use my full bandwidth. Most are restricted on the other end. (And I don't have a killer INet speeds)
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Eddie Foy I've got a schedule so it has the ability to use all the bandwidth while I'm at work and asleep.
G+_Eddie Foy
But does it use the full bandwidth? You can't download faster then the other end(s)
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
I haven't really checked since it won't ever affect me if it did. I assume it does since I have roughly 200 torrents going
G+_Cody Kochmann
As far as CPU usage, in order to keep that down, I find that limiting the number of connected peers makes the most difference.
