G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Is there a way to have a torrent server running on Linux? All the google searches show torrent clients and a prebuilt appliance called turnkey. Looking for something that can run on Debian/Ubuntu.
G+_Ben Reese
Isn't a torrent client also a torrent server? I haven't tried sharing my own files as a torrent, but always thought it was all part of the same application.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
I'm not sure. I've used transmission and as far as I know it's just a download client. Maybe I missed something.
G+_Ben Reese
Just did some quick research... Seems the missing component is a torrent tracker which will tell who actually has the file that's shared - in this case: you. I think the most helpful was this: lifehacker.com - How to Create a Super Private BitTorrent Community for You and Your Friends Basically, some clients have private trackers built in or you can choose to use a public tracker. Then on another page I found where you can create your own public tracker... Basically this lifehacker page seems the most helpful - maybe... Depends on what you're going for. But, with a torrent, every client is also a server for the files. It's the tracker that needs a centralized server of sorts - which can also be one of the clients. G+_Eddie Foy
Yup. Torrent is server-less. Its a peer to peer system. Unless you are trying to roll your own 'pirate bay' magnet farm. In transmission to make a torrent of a file: just go to File > Create Torrent
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
It's a lan setup. No plans for any outside connections.
G+_Eddie Foy
Whats the point of torrenting inside a LAN?
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Just to try something out. If it works out I might setup an openvpn server and use a spare pc and lan turtle offsite for backups.
G+_Ben Reese
You might be interested in syncthing or bittorrent sync than. Both will do p2p syncing using torrent-like methods.
G+_Eddie Foy
Ok. VPN is outside access. (well, usually) I'd opt for syncthing over BTSync/Sync.)It not opensource and central server.) Syncing folders verse sharing a file is rather different. One of me favorite questions is: What the problem you are trying to solve? No solution can be solved before that question being answered. G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
This is true ,Vpn is outside the lan. Long story short, transfer speeds. Bt sync is a no go. I'll look into the other.
G+_David Wiggins
I also like zfs replication between freeNAS hosts fit backup/sync. Or go oldschool with rsync
