G+_Golden Retriever
Did anyone say check https://www.amazon.com/Drobo-5-Drive-Attached-Storage-DDR4A21/dp/B01M0K1SEB/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1492864526&sr=1-1&keywords=drobo&th=
G+_Peter Hanse
Tod Sage I have always wanted to try drobo but needed network attached. And extra items Apps you could install on Synology sold me on it over drobo
G+_Golden Retriever
The nice thing about drobo is it does not care if you mix media devices, if you have old HDD's laying around you could give them a spinrite then toss them in the box
G+_Peter Hanse
Tod Sage that is one of the reasons I liked drobo. Their is limits to it as well. Synology does a hybrid as well if you do. It want traditional raid. Also drobo had memory just incase write is interrupted with power or lockup so on recovery it could complete operation. G+_John D. Hawkins
I think I may end up settling with this for now. amazon.com - Amazon.com: WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Network Attached Storage - NAS - WDBCTL0040HWT-NESN: Computers & Accessories
G+_Golden Retriever
John D. Hawkins I guess to get a good answer requires knowledge of working expenses, I'm just using a USB 3.0 HDD plugged into a port on my Asus router for the same reason "lack of cash" I would love to use Carbonite, they have differential backup, they will even ship out a preimage hard drives overnight should you require it, but again I can't afford it. G+_Peter Hanse
John D. Hawkins low cost of integrated drives is why I have considered purchasing some and pulling drives out. Seen many portable external USB 3 drives that are much lower cost then internal 2.5 drives.
G+_Ben Reese
Peter Hanse which makes me question the quality of those drives - I've thought about doing the same thing... And since my goal is to build a NAS, I'll probably go with WD Red drives. Although, the price on Green or Blue is pretty tempting. $90 for 3TB (×3) looks a lot better than $110. G+_Peter Hanse
Ben Reese I would say usage should also come in play. How much data are you changing and how much access are you doing. I have had high end drives fail and low end drives fail. Key is always data backup and redundant drive setup. But for question at hand I am concerned with hardware delivered by Hard drive makers since its cost is less then drives alone. What are they doing cutting cost on drives or on NAS they make Mabe both.
G+_John D. Hawkins
At some point I would like to go all in on building an all in server/NAS for the house. But that will be down the road when we aren't renting and I have the time to plan out the physical location of the equipment. For now I'm thinking that little guy above plugged into my router. It should be safe behind the my TV. Tons of airflow and nobody gets back there. Should be an outta site outta mind scenario. Now to put together a sales pitch that The Boss (wife) can't turn down! LOL Thanks very much for your input guys. I'm thinking I'll refer back to this when I build out the big box. I may just use the server box I have now if I can figure out a wireless option as it is sitting in the garage on my workbench.
G+_Golden Retriever
John D. Hawkins check Sam's Club if you have a membership, seems I seen one with similar spec but better price.
G+_Golden Retriever
Ide say go ahead and buy cheep drives, but run spinright on them first to mark out all the potentially questionable sectors and turn off some of the most egregious parts of smart then run them until there junk.
