G+_John D. Hawkins
So I was describing how awesome the dynamics of the group are to my wife when I realized I've been fighting an issue the KITA's might be able to help with on my home network. High level info on my network: Router: ASUS RT-AC68U Firmware: Updated 12/9 Networks: 2G, 5G, 2G Guest, 5G Guest SSID Hidden for all networks IoT devices: Echo Dots x2 on Guest My kids' Pi3 on guest PS3 (WL) & 4 (Ethernet) TV (Ethernet) Laptops x2 (WL) Desktop x1 (WL) iPhone x4 iPad x1 Connectivity drops for my laptop and when I go to log into the router it says that my IP information has changed and the page will refresh. The page refreshes and I'm up and running. It wouldn't be a huge deal except it happens pretty frequently. I tried giving my laptop a static IP address on the router but it didn't seem to do anything. Would it help to put the same static IP on the laptop itself? G+_Joe Polcari
I have the same router and see the same results. Make sure your browser has not remembered any related URLs for the router. You could also try clearing the cookies and DNS cache in the browser itself. You can google how to do both.
G+_Joe Polcari
Also, I like that the router is linux based and you can all sorts of stuff with it.
G+_Steven Werds
Draw back if you static IP your laptop it will have difficulties with other routers. Yes your router is refreshing your IP address. Run a test ipconfig record you IP address then wait for the fault and again run ipconfig compare the two numbers. Also check how good the signal is and check for interference. Check with an app on your phone ""wifi analyzer"" You may way to change frequencies if you neighbors or other wifi connects are causing problems
G+_Black Merc
Instead of the laptop with a static address... Have the router assign an known address to the MAC of the laptop. Reduces the chance of address conflicts, and if you goto another network(work, starbucks), you will not have the need to change the laptop settings. G+_Paul Hutchinson
Hidden SSID's can cause intermittent connection problems for some devices and since they don't actually provide any extra security you might want to try turning the SSID's back on. howtogeek.com - Debunking Myths: Is Hiding Your Wireless SSID Really More Secure? G+_Rud Dog
When the Asus router was spotted on our list of hardware alarm bells went off. We too suffer from laptop disconnection, my wife will yell from the other room is the internet down, only to find the screen showing some message from the router. G+_John D. Hawkins
Black Merc yeah that’s how I assigned it’s IP before but it didn’t really have any effect.
G+_Rud Dog
John D. Hawkins Started a long discussion with Asus on the issue of disconnecting. They just blew me off as not something they had heard of later found many listing from google search stating they were having the same problem. They suggested I ship it back to them and they would evaluate and let me know if it would be something they could address. I then blew them off. I have to pay for shipping and while it is under evaluation I have to buy another router? Asus lost a customer.
G+_Steven Atkinson
I've a couple of thoughts. Is your laptop on both the main and guest networks and jumping between them? Have you tried the Asus-Merlin firmware? I'm running it in a N66U and it's proved very stable. asuswrt.lostrealm.ca - Home | Asuswrt-Merlin
G+_Rud Dog
Steven Atkinson I cringe when I see a third-party firmware update. But I suppose if all goes well and you don't like it you can go back to the original firmware. Now not sure what this is supposed to address as far as the problem goes. Having said that I am tempted to try, beings ASUS has not come up with any updates to resolve my issue. Oh forgot to mention ASUS RT-AC87U has a habit of physically rebooting and even with the Log being sent to Asus they could only respond with; Odd? Time to collect the links, firmware from both and then see if I can pull myself to trying this out. Hopefully won't find myself working on this until 25th of the month. G+_Steven Atkinson
This third party firmware is based on the original Asuswrt firmware. To quote the website "its primary goals are to enhance the existing firmware without bringing any radical changes, and to fix some of the known issues and limitations, while maintaining the same level of performance as the original firmware.". Which is why I started using it. Your right it may not fix the problem, but it's worth a try before spending any money on a new router. Something else worth looking at is to make sure the laptop wireless drivers are fully up to date.
G+_Jon Paul Bubendorfer
I agree with assigning IP based on Mac at the router. But if it's randomly rebooting, sounds like the router has a fault
G+_Rud Dog
This is something worthwhile reviewing if you own an ASUS router. https://www.google.com/search?q=asus+router+reboots&rlz=1C1CHZL_enUS748US748&oq=asus+router+reboots&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l5.8654j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-
G+_John D. Hawkins
I wish it were rebooting. That would be at least a visual indication of a problem. My wife will be working on her desktop and I on my laptop. I drop she doesn’t. Seems like it has to do with my laptop but manifesting on the router. Bad radio in my laptop? G+_Jon Paul Bubendorfer
Oh, ok. Good suggestions above. Lots of things to check, I'm too busy to help right now, sorry
G+_Rud Dog
John D. Hawkins I did not know it was rebooting for the longest time beings it recovers on its own. Also it was rebooting during off peak usage. But when it rebooted during regular usage and I checked the log it was interesting it had been rebooting far more than I knew. Just a FYI. Oh and yes I would be online and my wife would lose WiFi connection. That scenario came later. Thinking I starting to agree with those here it has to do with the firmware on the router. Lastly the laptop used by my wife one of apples laptops.
G+_John D. Hawkins
Rud Dog I’d check the settings on the web interface and see whether or not something may have been set. Mine is set to reboot three times a week at midnight in an attempt to address this issue.
G+_Rud Dog
John D. Hawkins Will do. Can you guide me to where this setting might be?
G+_John D. Hawkins
Rud Dog if your on the latest firmware 3.0.0.4.382_18881... Go to Administration on the left/System/Basic Config. Also checkout what I found tonight about its Amazon 4/5 star review. fakespot.com - ASUS RT-AC68U Wireless-AC1900 Dual-Band Gigabit Router
G+_Rud Dog
John D. Hawkins Found the fakespot link interesting. Checked my reboot for the router and it appears the default is off and since I have never changed it my reboots are not related to this setting. Great news in some ways. G+_Rud Dog
Oh and have downloaded all the latest Asus firmware for possible rollback and the Asuswrt-Merlin firmware. Now will probably wait till after the first of the year so no interruptions are encountered this close to the Holidays. Fingers crossed and will update after firmware change over. G+_Technical Terry
I too can vouch for the Merlin firmware. Been running for a couple of years now. (With updates, of course. Usually as soon as I see one available.)
