G+_Bostjan Cadej
In 119 show in steps for downloading #YouTube videos with #VLC you said that we'll get the raw file. That is not true. We get the 720p version of the video. Even if there is a 1080p video we'll get 720. Other plugings can get 1080p video. Please elaborate this. Thank you. G+_Ben Reese
Yeah, that didn't make sense when Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ? said it and it still doesn't make sense lol. Maybe he changed some settings in VLC that made it pull the 1080 version, but I experienced the same thing you did. I uploaded a video from my M8 last night at 1920×1080. Just now I downloaded the video using this method and got a 1280×720 version. The file uploaded was 114MB and the file downloaded was 15.7MB. That's OK though... We're all human and bound to speak without proper research at some point. I'm incredibly jealous of everything the hosts know and the opportunities they have to play with tech gadgets! G+_Bostjan Cadej
When I upload 1080p video from my phone on Youtube I just get the option to watch 720 video. There in no 1080 available. And I cannot download 1080 with plugings. But where there is an option on Youtube that I can watch 1080 resolution, then I can download 1080 video. About the size. Youtube uses compresion intensivly. I've uploaded 1080p video of about 1GB in size, but Youtube converted it to 1080p video of about 250 MB. G+_Ben Reese
I verified that the original video on my phone was 1080 and that Youtube.com had the option to play it in 1080. I wouldn't expect to download a 1080p video if I shot it in 720 or it was down converted during the upload process. ? For what it's worth, though... I'm only seeing options for 720 on the YouTube app.

G+_Ben Reese
I don't know. Probably gives you the 720p transcoded version. I don't really care though. The VLC method is super helpful regardless of which resolution you download. Most can't tell the difference between 720 and 1080 and most don't have a 4k display. G+_Jeff Brand
Reading through VLC's code, it tries to pick the best resolution by scraping the viewing page. If a fmt parameter isn't provided in the URL, it picks the first one which should be the highest-quality version. Perhaps YouTube requires a special method to request higher quality. Can you provide some sample 1080p video URLs?
