G+_Justin Egan
Hello group. I am wanting to build a media server. I have and old Dell laptop that is running Ubuntu. My question is I need to have my movie files on an external hard drive and if USB @.0 is fast enough to stream using Plex? Any input would help. Thanks. G+_Ben Reese
Short answer is yes. Longer answer is that your laptop may be the bottleneck or even the speed of your external drive. I think USB 2.0 is rated at 480 Mbps and Plex can stream over < 1 Mbps if it's able to transcode the video. As far as I know, Plex still doesn't use the GPU for transcoding, so that process is all CPU bound.
G+_Ben Reese
I don't think Kodi (XBMC) would be better unless the laptop is directly connected to one tv.
G+_Jason Marsh
I have used USB2 for mass storage on a Plex Server/PHT device for my brother's house, and he hasn't complained about it, so... Yes, it should be fine, although Plex may get slow/buggy when updating your (massive) library.
