Hey All,

I recently bought a Synology NAS to replace an old desktop that was acting as a file server, media server, etc.. and is on the fritz.

I am using synology's hybrid raid system on two WD red's and have a backup set up to offsite.

However, none of these steps protect against data corruption and I want to know what I can do to address this.

My offsite backup does have versioning, but there are some files that I may take a long time to find out have been corrupted and manually searching back through versions at that point could be a hassle, if there is an automated alternative.

Thanks!

Bit rot really isn't as much of a problem today.  Most hard drives have logic built in to prevent it.  You'd have to be extremely unlucky to get bit by bit rot today.  Much more likely to have filesystem corruption.  Which causes just as many problems/issues.

No, I don't know of any automatic way to check for bit rot.  Running a full filesystem check would catch it tho.  (chkdsk or fsck.)
