G+_James L
Hi there I've got a question, what is the real life speed for a wireless N 5 ghz connection? I can only achieve max 7 megabyte a second. Is that normal? Thanks
G+_Ben Reese
Depends on where you're testing your speed to. If you're using something online (such as SpeedTest.net), you'll be limited by the bandwidth you're getting from your ISP.
G+_James L
What about local lan?
G+_Ben Reese
Local LAN will depend on your range from the access point, your connection type, and your testing method. Most wireless connections should be better than 7 Mbps when you're right next to the router. 802.11ac will give you the best speed followed by N then G (though some suggest the last two could be swapped in real-world use). Then you have to consider your drop off from range and interference... 2.4Ghz will have longer range than 5Ghz, but 2.4 is usually congested in most neighborhoods causing decreased performance. One more thing to look at is Mbps vs MBps. Now that I reread your question, you're asking about megabytes (big 'B') but most SpeedTest services will tell you megabits (little 'b'). If you're getting 7 MBps (56 Mbps), that's probably average for local LAN and pretty good for Internet. If you're getting 7 Mbps (0.875 MBps), that's low average for Internet (mid for DSL, low for Cable) and pretty poor for LAN.
G+_James L
Ahh thanks yeah I'm getting 7 MBPS (big B as in Bytes). So it looks like its not an issue then
