G+_Jason McKinney
I'm helping out a friend upgrade a laptop HDD to an SSD. Now, I use Samsung 850 EVO's in my main PC. But, Padre suggests a Kingston many times during an SSD segment. I am all for getting an 850EVO for the upgrade, but if Padre suggests it... 1: What's the one he suggests? (Looking at 250gb+) 2: Or should I stick to the 850's?
G+_Steve C
I always just get whatever is on sale at Frys. Don't buy from Newegg though, those crooks sent me 4 bad ones in a row and wouldn't take them back or give me a refund!
G+_Ben Reese
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ? has always said avoid the cheap versions of drives, but I'm not really sure if that includes the 850 EVO drives. Kingston makes a drive around the same price (V300 I think), but I think he's always referred to their more expensive line of drives.
G+_Ben Reese
FWIW, the last episode Padre interviewed someone from Kingston who said a couple times that no SSD from a reputable company should fail with normal use. That makes it difficult to pull the trigger on a more expensive drive unless you just want the speed or capacity - which is also something else they talked about. G+_Derek Anderson
I just swapped out a 500GB HDD in my laptop with an 500 GB 850 Evo SSD from Amazon for $177. Did a direct drive clone and it was super easy. And the laptop is blazing fast now. Almost instantaneous wake from hibernation when opening the lid on it. 850 Evo is an excellent drive. Very fast. G+_Steve C
>no SSD from a reputable company should fail with normal use. Correct except for OCZ, a lot of theirs are dead right out of the package.
G+_Ben Reese
Then it could be argued that OCZ is no longer a reputable company lol.
G+_Ben Reese
Wayne Hobbins? Sounds like a good price. I had a 250 GB HDD die in my desktop so I need to replace it. If I can't talk my wife into letting me buy a Synology NAS in the next few months I'll probably be putting an SSD in my PC.
G+_Travis Hershberger
I recently put a Samsung 845 Pro into my laptop that runs Mint. Boot to login screen time was almost all BIOS, and logging into a desktop is less than two seconds now. I've also a a Samsung 840 Evo in my Windows 7 desktop. Really like the price/performance of the Samsung drives and would prefer the Pro line over the Evo for those rare cases of surprise power loss (the Evo's can loose data in cache if the power fails at the wrong time.) G+_Derek Anderson
Be careful with crucial MX100's. Make sure you use their firmware update took to update the firmware. I built several high end machines to run Revit and put 500gig MX100's in them because of price and performance. They started getting random BSOD's. And every time the comp restarted it went straight to bios and there was no SSD recognized. After pulling power cord and restarting everything was fine. Extremely random but every mx100 did it. Until crucial put out a firmware update recently. Now you can get a Samsung 850 Evo for $20 cheaper than the new mx200. Just get the Samsung. Their magician drive utility is awesome, best on the market. You can set up a ram cache, it's amazing fast.
