Know the limits of your tools.. I have a bargain Wal-Mart socket set that was originally purchased so that I could fit a bike into my car. That same set (minus the ratchet which exploded in year 3) has lasted through 11+ years of bike, moped, motorcycle, and home repair.

Once you work with cheap tools you'll understand the engineering, materials, and precision that goes into them and understand the value of their pricier counterparts.

I haven't needed much more than what that original set provides me. I'm careful not to strip anything, or over torque it. Do the same and you can often get lots of use from cheap tools.

Alternate story: My dollar store mini screwdrivers lasted about one use each. If I ever get back into laptop repair, I'm going with Ifixit. :D

I bought a Pittsburgh 130? piece Harbor Freight kit for ~$30 a couple years ago. Used one of the screwdrivers as a pry bar and bent it. Took it to harbor freight and they replaced it with no receipt or questions asked. As a result, when it comes to cheap hand tools, HF is my only stop.
