G+_John Mink
Thanks everybody, this was totally just a BIOS setting! :) Server auto-on after Power Outage I have an Ubuntu machine that I treat as a server (always on, does some web services & so on). I even have it setup to boot without a password, the whole idea being I don't want to ever need physically use the machine, that's what VNC is for! So given that it can 100% boot up by pressing the power button, is there a way I can have it boot up after power is restored (from a power outage)? I suppose I could rig up something to go in parallel to the power switch but i'd prefer a less, jenky, solution.
G+_Dan Phillips
How long are the power outages? If you're talking only a few minutes or seconds, gets yourself a UPS (Universal Power Supply). The make ones for the non commercial use and are easily found in Wal Mart, Staples, etc. They way if the power flickers during a storm, your machine stays online no matter what. G+_John Mink
Dan Phillips should have specified, but i'm talking extended outages. Maybe a few hours or a day? Long enough that the computer is OFF, and then gets power again.
G+_Dan Phillips
Ahh ok. Like Jungle Boogie said, check your BIOS. If not then look for a SmartUPS which will be more expensive but can get the job done. However, I wouldn't expect that the software they ship with will not work on Ubuntu. G+_John Mink
Dan Phillips yeah, somehow that wouldn't surprise me.... I'll take a look at the BIOS & see if there is anything. Is there a standard feature name for this or would that be too easy?
G+_Dan Phillips
Something like "restore on AC Power Loss". It depends on the board.
G+_John Mink
mmk, I shall take a look this afternoon when I get home!
G+_Alex Knutson-Smisek
John Mink some motherboards also support boot on lan. Not as elegant a solution, but it allows the computer to be turned on when the network sends a request to a specific address.
G+_John Mink
I had a short power outage today (~2 minutes) so I took the opportunity to check this out. Ends up that there is an option in BIOS called "AC Back Function". Now my computer starts up when the power comes back...exactly what I was hoping for! Now I just need Linux to be more cooperative & do things in the right order :p
