G+_Eddie Foy
aspirin is a natural rooting powder. Which comes from (not exclusively) Willow tree bark. Nature usually provides the solution; science (research paid for by...) offers customers.
G+_Jason Marsh
Toby Robb Sort of, but No. There isn't just one chemical called auxin. While some synthesized auxins were used in agent orange, and rooting compounds contain some synth auxins, they are not the same thing.
G+_Toby Robb
Jason Marsh? Correct. Yes the group of auxins contain many derivatives. 2,4-T and 2,4,5-T made plants elongate dramatically , i think, which could be used as a herbicide. Looking at my initial phrasing, I should have made it more clear. Auxins are a group of which cause elongation generally, rooting powders are one use, but they can kill the plant, hence the use for defoliant in Vietnam. However, there are many more plant growth regulators, including cytokinin, which encourages the formation of shoots through rapid cell division i think. Combinations of hormones are used in the tissue culture of seedlings from super small pieces of plant parts to first form shoots, then change of hormone to form roots, all in a gel medium. You may know all this etc. But for others, Its interesting to study plant cells....
