G+_Keith Mallett
Yet another reason to pic up another Pi... http://www.instructables.com/id/Raspberry-Pi-As-a-NAS-Network-Attached-Storage/ http://www.instructables.com/id/Raspberry-Pi-As-a-NAS-Network-Attached-Storage
G+_Eddie Foy
The 10Mb port would be a bottleneck. Ok for simple home stuff.
G+_Ben Reese
I'm pretty sure it's 100Mbps, but would still be the bottleneck. Especially since the ethernet chip is off the USB bus so, the bandwidth would be shared with the drive. But.... USB 2.0 is supposed to get 450Mbps, so even cutting that in half or quarter should be plenty to fill the 100Mb ethernet. Adding a Gigabit LAN adapter over USB should allow you to double your transfer speeds. ... All theoretical, of course.
G+_John Lynch
For a far easier way install openelec and enable samba shares. Job done
G+_Keith Mallett
Eddie Foy the 3 has a 10/100 . Ben Reese has a good point but it would be nice if the next version supported USB 3.... Check the spec's on the one you have. I just thought this was cool... ALthough I would like Blueberry and Coconut Pi one day too... https://www.raspberrypi.org/magpi/raspberry-pi-3-specs-benchmarks/
G+_Ben Yanke
It's 100mbps, but the processor and memory will also be more of a bottleneck than the interface, at least on the 2. If you have no $$, the Pi certainly can work well enough, though if you have the resources, it's not really that great of a NAS platform...underpowered, no easy drive mirroring and data protection, etc.....
