G+_Alain Lafond
Hi all, In the winter time I live in Thailand. Everything is perfect, except: I need to use the condo building wifi. It's a commercial service and quality is below average. But it permits online one access and does not permit Torrent download. Anyone knows how I could go around those limitations? G+_Ben Reese
Bring your own access point or repeater. If cell service is usable and allows, tethering to a phone or using a MiFi could be better than your shared access. Would probably have to use a VPN service if you wanted to torrent on their service, but check TOS of your VPN provider.
G+_Alain Lafond
That's what I did (using tethering) but it's expensive. As I'm there for 5 months, I need acheaper way. In the building you have to buy an access. They give you a card with an username, a password and it's good for the month. But internet access ain't very good. And your device need to be on the balconny. And also you cannot connect more than 1 device.
G+_Ben Reese
Would a repeater or personal WAP trick the system?
G+_Jason Marsh
How about a panel antenna hooked to a USB wifi dongle or, as Ben Reese suggested, a repurposed WAP. You can setup MAC cloning on just about any AP/router ever made, and you can use that to make your repeater/WAP appear to be your one device that you've authenticated to their system, then you get to share that single connection with as many devices as your WAP/repeater/whatever can handle. G+_Alain Lafond
Thanks all for helping. Last year, I've bought a long USB extension cable, a USB network card. I had to extend my connection to the balconny because inside the condo connection was terrible. It worked, but connection was slow (10 mb/s). But yesterday I tried my Note 3 as a modem on windose 10. WOW, it's working. I never was able to make it work with windose 10. In Thailand data are very cheap (unlimited data (12 gb LTE, then the rest of the month 384 kb)) all this for less thant $35.00 a month. I don't know if then block torrent. Last trip I used a VPN service (VPN unlimited), but it was sooooo slow that it was impossible to listen to canadian TV on the net.... I won't complain more. Spending 5 months a year of my retirement in Thailand it's such a lucky thing... Again, thanks all for your help.
