I am an avid fan of Know How. I have 2 suggestions for show ideas.

1) I installed a synology security system based on the Synology episode you had with cameras over a year ago. I used the 4 bay synology system you suggested. SInce then I have noticed alot of extra features available from synology. Example Itunes server, Cloud server Video station ect. ect. I would love for you to give a more detailed review on how to use these products. For example how do you remote view your cameras from outside your home network. How do you use the other services on synology.

2) We have had several break ins in my neighborhood. Most in our neighborhood have security cameras. However even though you get a description of the person, Police still have the problem of identifying them.

Police detective said most home robbers at least check their phones at least once while in your home. My question to you and a good suggestion for a show is. Can I create an open wifi hotspot that any home intruders phone would automatically connect to . ( kinda like what xfinity wifi hotspots do all the time)

Then somehow get identifiable information of the owner of the phone? This would only take place in my home.

Thank you PadreSJ for all you do.

For idea number 2, many modern routers have a guest mode you can enable that will create a second open network (VLAN) in your house.

However most modern phones by default will not automatically connect to open WiFi but any dumb burglar would likely say yes connect to the WiFi so you may get their MAC address recorded in your DHCP server. Unfortunately MAC address randomization and spoofing will decrease the reliability of nailing down a MAC address to a specific device.

BTW if you don't want to have to make sure your DHCP server is saving the information you can install a Fingbox and it will record the information.

No.2 I think a Pico-cell(cellular through internet, I think that's what it's called) with a wireshark tap would do better for identifying the intruder. Any(and I mean ANY) traffic through (calls, texts) should show up and a cellular 'finger print' may be deduced for the errant phone pairing to the Pico.

So you could check out Hak5's episode on the WiFi cactus. My biggest concern with trying this is the volume of data you could be looking at.

The only way to ensure you get the info you need is to find a way to identify everything. If you identify everything how do you find what you are looking for.

My first course of action would be to play with happy bubbles. The other option would be to sniff packet data from the GSM data from the phones. I haven't looked at this in a long time so I have no idea what is out there anymore.

The Pico cell idea sounds good. I'd expect all traffic to be encrypted between the the mini tower and their network. This is probably carrier specific too, so an AT&T pico cell may not capture Sprint connections.

The fingbox hardware claims to cover this issue with its digital fence, however. They claim it will identify network devices in the area even if they don't connect to your network.

I think you could do this with a Raspberry Pi and an external adapter (would probably need to be capable of "promiscuous mode"), but I don't know how.
