Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ , I know you are a Enterprise networking guru. Have you had any experience with Ubiqiuti equipment? I have been seeing several websites and Youtube videos about people using them for Home networking. What are your thoughts and what about all the Kitas out there.. Thanks

I work as tech support for a company that uses them at sites all over the country. The biggest problem they have is the individual ISP's service going down or power outages( with dead UPS's ).... and various and sundry devices the end users want to use .

I just went with the 4 port edgerouter and Unifi AP-AC-LITE for wifi.

Couldn;t be happier.

I've had several consumer routers fail over the past 15 years. Some just died, others lost wifi and other with dead LAN ports. This component system seems easier to replace the Lan side for $55 and the wifi for $90.

I bought a second router to have on standby and can get the less critical

AP in short order from Amazon.

We use their point-to-point radio systems at work. They have 900Mhz, 2.4GHz, 3.6GHz, and 5GHz models. They are quite reliable until the users forget to trim the trees next to them and they get knocked out of alignment.

We use Cisco and Meraki every where else so I don't know about that equipment.

My only concern I had with the access points when I looked was the lower priced models did not us industry standard POE. I don't get why. Also you had to have a computer running 24x7 to do management of multiple access points. They need to put that capability into on AP and have it be the master.

In the future I would look very closely at using their equipment except my router because I use PFSense not because of their equipment. I have heard no horror stories about them.

I know Steve Gibson from grc.com - Home of Gibson Research Corporation likes and recommends them especially the edge router. On the edge router be careful if you have the need to push 1Gb of network traffic. It has 1Gb ports but only has the capability of passing about 300-400 Mb worth of traffic due to a lower end processor according to a review I read on it. It is only $50 you know. :)

Thanks

Thanks. There will be no problem with the speeds for me... I have no where near that, I use Hughes Satellite. which is a big leap from dialup. Its fast enough for what I do. I let Youtube videos buffer for a while so they can play through without stopping.

Im thinking about just one AP AC Lite to start with. and just plugging it in to my existing router to see how that works for starters. I may get a Edge Router X a little later and maybe a USG. I don't have much area to cover so I doubt Ill need more than one AP.... I sure as heck dont need a 48 port switch :-)
