G+_Nicholas Mattis
Hey know it alls. I need a little bit of help with a NAS that I'm building. I have a 2U server with 6 hard drive bays and was wondering what the best raid solution would be for that. I want to get the most storage that I can out of it but I also would like some redundancy so that a drive could fail without data loss. I can't decide if 3TB drives would be enough or if I should go with 4TB drives. With that in mind I was just wondering what kind of storage space would I get out of those two options with some redundancy for drives built in. Also the server has 32gb of ram so I was planning on using ZFS.
G+_Taylor Graham
We were just talking about this in another post here, look back a bit. My personal opinion (based on experience with a few freenas builds) is that you use raid z2. Check the other thread if you want to know why. Also, right now the 3TB red drives are the best $/GB, i just ordered 4 of them for a nas build. 6 of them will get you 12TB of storage with raid z2. 32gb of ram will be plenty for anything though. Is it ECC ram? Error correcting ram is highly recommended with ZFS. If you choose not to use it, definitely make sure you use z2/z3 (which you should be using anyway). G+_Bostjan Cadej
Yes. ZFS is the way to go.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
With 6 x 3TB your 32GB box should be able to handle all the RAID/FS overhead with plenty of memory to spare for all your plugins. I believe FreeNAS will default to RAIDZ2, giving you 12TB of usable space with the ability to suffer two drive failures (4 x 3TB + 2 Parity) before the array is compromised and vulnerable to data loss. Have fun!
