I have a question about Freenas compression. Do I need it? I'm storing movies and files on my home network and then using a vpn to acess them remotely. From reading it says compression helps with performance gain and I am just wondering if it is necessary for what I am doing? Also which one is the best one to use for a ZFS volume?

Disk compression actually hurts performance. Your nas has to have a pretty good cpu for compression to work well. Whether you need it or not depends on how much you are storing and how much disk space you have. I enabled it in my nas, but only after I got close to 3tb of videos on a 3.39 tb array. I have noticed that videos do not compress well. So most likely, you will only notice a performance decrease from it. But if you start to run out of space down the road, enabling compression will only affect new data. (which kind of bummed me out :) )
