Did I make the wrong decision?

Did I make the wrong decision?  I just bought a Note 8.0 last Saturday.  I like playing around with it and it fits my needs for a portable tablet.  Only problem is that I've got the envy now of the 1080p screen of the new Nexus 7.  Really only thing I "needed" was precision selection on the screen so I went with the note.  Now I like the idea of wireless charging and that screen.

Anyone want to chime in and talk me into a direction?  I have the Silver Premier status with Best Buy so I have 60 days to return the Note.  There is a substantial price difference between the 2 so I could actually have money to buy some accessories.  I'm not sweating the cost too much, but it is a perk.

Help me Obi-wan, uh.... you guys are a good source of information.

Thanks.  I'm thinking I would like the Vanilla of it.  I'm going to actually dive in deeper in the next day and really push my needs out of the Note.  If it seems that I don't require the S pen, then it's off to the Nexus!  I'm curious if it is just a "Shiny" addiction since I've never owned a nexus device.

Just bought the Nexus 7. Picking it up in an hour. Went with it due to price and display. I guess if you need to have an xd card and don't mind the lower resolution display, stay with what you have. If you want the HD display of the new Nexus 7, trade in your Note 8.

As someone who also has a Note 8 (http://www.fridley.com.au/reviews/hardware/samsung-galaxy-note-8/ ) I am already starting to notice a few things that would shift me towards the Nexus 7. While the Note 8 is going to perform well for 90% of the tasks I set it, when it comes to games (for my kids of course...) the response is just a bit too slow. Playing something like pinball or minions run ecomes a bit of a struggle.

Either way, the nexus is the new shiny shiny and so, if you can, go with it for sure.

Very valid points James Fridley.  I don't game really at all, just a few tower defense style ones.  I like using the S pen for laying the towers precisely.

I do believe the N7 has 2 GB of ram like the note does.  I do some word document editing on my current Tab Plus 7.0 and I wanted the ability to select text a little finer instead of stabbing at air.  That was my first inclination to get the Note line.  I think I like the 8 inch form factor but it is so hard to compare with my Tab now because the resolution on it is just terrible.

I used to watch a lot of YouTube on it as well so I was hoping for the sharper experience of the newer devices which again brought me to the Nexus line with it's 1080p screen.  Ideally I would have bought a nexus 10 and been done with it, but I just think that screen size is too large for a tablet.  I have quite large hands and have a tendency to try to grip everything one handed.  This again tips towards the Nexus device.

Thanks for the insight.  I appreciate all the feedback everyone has provides thus far

I love my Note 8 and have no urge to get the new Nexus 7. I have had Nexus products and they just don't do it for me. I've popped back and forth between 7 and 10.1 and the 8 is the best size for me. I love how the Note 8 lets you use the S Pen with any most apps, handwriting at that size is perfect and it's portable without having to zoom in and out all the time.

All that said, it's your choice, just make it while you're in that return window:)

edit - I have an S4 which has an amazing screen and upgraded to the Note 8 because the Note 10.1 screen wasn't up to snuff.

Greg Busby it is all use case.  I had a Nexus 7, gave it to my son and swapped out for a 10 inch Transformer because I wanted the keyboard for certain instances and the extra battery power.  It takes a lot of will power to not go buy that Nexus 7 as I miss the 7inch size, the updates when there is something new, and just the overall good experience I had with the first gen.  That said, in my brothers case he was comign from the iPad, wanted an sPen, and loved the Note 8 more than any other Android tablet.  He is within a return window and wouldn't think of changing out for that because he doesn't want anything smaller or that doesn't include a pen.

I am really coming into the joys of the Note. I enjoy the light weight and the size of the text when trying to read is pleasant at worst. Thanks everyone for the input. This is the reason I love google+ so much. The openness of every reader to genuinely add to a conversation instead of trolling.

Thanks again everyone. I welcome more input and will keep updates rolling as I tackle this purchase/return.

Update time. I went out and bought a nexus 7 yesterday to try side by side. I have to say that screen is amazing. Going to be a tough decision.

I really am a little tired of the Touch whiz stuff on the note but I have turned a few things off. I don't know how anyone could stand the smart stay feature. Maybe my eyes just roam too much for that though.

Battery life on the note has been a touch disappointing so far but I am going to turn down the brightness a little and try again. I look forward to the next week and hopefully can get a decision on the books.

Now I just have to keep from buying the new moto x phone.

  • 3 weeks later...

OK, update time.

I took back the Note yesterday. After playing around with both tablets for what felt like forever I realized I love the screen on the nexus and didn't require some of the initial "wants" on the Note.

I can say that the Note is a great tablet but I do agree it is a touch wide. My biggest desire for a tablet is usability with one hand as much possible. The Nexus 7 is very light and just thin enough to use one handed. I think the Note feels a touch lighter but it seemed that the extra girth really acted more as a lever. This extra width really tired my arm when reading one handed.

Both these tablets have HUGE potential but I think the Nexus won me over. I am learning I am a fan of vanilla android too. I am very thankful there are choices in this category and I look forward to the next generation of tablets.

Until my next indecision, thanks for everyone that spoke up.
