I didn't know this about Nokia but it explains a lot. They really could have owned Android in Europe. I don't remember the timeline perfectly but I do wonder how things would have been different if they hadn't hired a CEO sympathetic to (or strategically embedded by) Microsoft and gone full force into Android. Would it have affected Samsung's rise? Say what you want about Sammy but I believe being the only name in Android big enough to challenge Apple during that period around when the GS3 came out was a big boost to the Android brand. Things might have been different if there were two or three medium sized names instead of one big name.

There's a bit of press chatter about Nokia maybe making Android phones next year, but all I can think of is what a huge tragedy for Finland the whole sad Nokia saga is.

The fall of the gem of Finnish industry is now complete. Victims of possibly the most blatant (and predictable) corporate raid in history, then a shell of its former self, and now effectively relocated to China, the Nokia consumer brand now has as much to do with the Nokia we remember, as today's Atari does to the company that made the 2600. Nokia is now as Chinese as Huawei, Lenovo, and Xiaomi. :-/

I truly believe that if they'd swallowed their pride rather than invite a wolf into their midst, they could well have been the premier Android OEM by now.

Ah well. Can't pine for what might have been... At least it seems they still have a future as an equipment supplier.

But I still want the awesome Nokia phone I never had the chance to buy. :(

I actually knew that, everyone makes like Microsoft pretty much took everything from Nokia but, all they got was the one line of hardware that they put their operating system on, Nokia still has all their patents and everything else, they just can't figure out what they want to do. It's sad too since they have/had some of the best hardware and by far the best reception on their devices that was out, until they got in Microsoft's mess. Their 3300 and N-Gage was great for their day, now if they could just mimic that if/when they come back, they might just get back on top again
