G+_Eric Benchimol
I'm curious to hear Gina Trapani 's view of the HTC One GE. I picked mine up yesterday (I'm an iPhone user), and was SO disappointed. The hardware is beautiful, but the sound made it un-usable for me. When earphone's are plugged in, there's a horrible hissing sound particularly audible during podcasts and audio books. Found tons about this online, with no known fix. I think it's only audible with higher-quality headphones. Other aspects of Android convinced me to stay with iOS for now. First, the lack of threaded conversations in any app that can access Exchange 2010 with ActiveSync (for my work). I use Gmail for home, but the stock Android e-mail app doesn't have threaded conversations for either. Also, no push email on the stock Android e-mail app for Gmail? That sucks... There were other little things that I could probably fix - lack of notification numbers to tell me how many unread e-mails I have, lack of notifications on the lock screen (my work won't allow left flick to a notifications screen without entering the passcode). These could be fixed with Tesla apps. But, the poor sound with earphones was a deal-breaker. VERY disappointed! :( http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc-one/295015-what-has-everybody-done-about-headphone-hiss-static.html
G+_Scott Hughes
I agree that the Android email app needs a serious makeover. Hopefully the issues you are having are patchable...
G+_Eric Benchimol
I think the lockscreen notifications were solved mostly with NiLS notification lockscreen, Tesla unread notifications, and Tesla's Widget Locker Lockscreen. But, I tried turning off NFC and Beats, and even tried factory restoring the phone, and the sound issues persisted. Apparently this happens on many of the phones, and people have gone through 3-5 exchanges, and not found a decent phone. I suspect it's not compatible with certain earbuds and headphones. I use high quality Klipsch earbuds, but also found the problem with lower quality buds. I might try again in a couple of months when these problems are fixed. I think HTC needs to issue an update before then...
G+_Dale Dubnyk
I use Sennhieser IE80 earbuds and haven't heard any buzzing...I also use a pair of HD650's with a headphone amp. But i'm guessing the amp gets rid of most of that if there was to be any. As for no push on stock gmail client? Are you kidding me? There is so. Its an IMAP system and it gets emails before the webclient gets them lots of times on my phone. As to the numbered notifications i use a custom rom and it brings all that functionality there. As well as the notification on the lockscreen. But the fact that no numbered notifications in stock form is unfortunate. Its handy to have. But i'm sure you can have lockscreen widgets which will show the emails and everything right there if you swipe to the side which does not require unlocking. G+_Eric Benchimol
Definitely not every HTC One has the hissing problem, but many people are complaining. Do you use the stock HTC music player? I had problems with podcasts, audible and Google Player. How do you set up IMAP with gmail? When I set up my gmail on the stock email app, it only offered 5min checks or less frequent, not push. There are definitely apps that would solve my notification needs... That wasn't the deciding factor - it was really the hiss.
G+_Greg Thomson
Have you tried K-9 Mail? It's often said to be one of the best alternative mail apps on Android. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fsck.k9
G+_Chris “W8WOT”
When gmail native app goes wonkers on me K-9 is my default backup. It is a wonderful email client. I also think a bit of google-fu and poking around xda and such you will find workarounds for the email issues. As for the sound issues. I would request a RMA and get a new device. That seems so odd but strangely accurate of HTC. Dont give up on the Android experience just yet. I always tell my friends that come from iOS to give android a full six months and to really try to make the change. If after six months you have yet to become comfortable then by all means go back to a iOS device.
G+_Eric Benchimol
k-9 mail apparently doesn't work with ActiveSync for Exchange 2010, which is what my work runs off. The irony was that I upgraded to the latest Outlook to get threaded conversations... I'm worried about ordering another HTC, because I'm reading people online who ordered 3-4 new ones, all with the same hiss. I might wait until it's fixed. I also wasn't thrilled with the screen or build quality of the GS4. I do want to give Android more of a shot, but might wait a little bit to see what else comes out... G+_Dale Dubnyk
I use Google play music. And also tunein radio. I never used the stock HTC app. And for stock gmail app don't you use the dedicated gmail app? Not the email app but the gmail app from the play store... G+_Chris “W8WOT”
I remembered seeing somebody talk about exchange issues once before and I couldnt remember what the app was they uses. I did some googling and ran across it in a article that might be helpful. http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/google-in-the-enterprise/troubleshooting-android-activesync-problems-with-exchange-2010/1913 At the end of the article is suggest the app I was trying to think of TOUCHDOWN. It can be found here. http://nitrodesk.com/ If that fails there is another app but I do not remember the name. I just briefly remember seeing it mentioned once before. With that said yes the full version of Touchdown is twenty bucks, but I have heard good things about it. The initial discussion about it I remember the person was a die-hard iPhone user but wanted to test out I think it was the Galaxy Nexus. The biggest hold up was exchange mail not working right. But Touchdown solved that for him.
G+_Eric Benchimol
Dale Dubnyk: Yes, but I'd rather one email program with a universal inbox. I was willing to use the gmail app for my home email, but my work only has Exchange, so would need to use a compatible app. Chris Flinn: thanks. Will try Touchdown!
