Ben Thompson of stratechery.com  said something very interesting about Samsung's announcement.

He said that Samsung has decided to focus on aesthetics rather than design. So they put aesthetics first and prioritized them over things the Samsung brand is known for, removable batteries, microSD card slots and as of last years model, waterproofing.

I said a similar thing yesterday where I found the phones to be almost a response to the list of things tech reviewers (like the Verge) hate about the Galaxy line, the plastic , the confusing memory, the focus on speeds and feeds.  If you looked at the keynote yesterday what did Samsung focus on yesterday? They talked about the build and design of the phone, (our engineers say it won't bend), they talked about the quality of the camera and its new UI (which I actually really like) which is taking full advantage of the new camera api in lollipop. The lack of lag and the flatter design for their own Samsung apps (which have been given some material design touches yet they never mention it) . No goofy features were mentioned, the specs were read off but were not the focus, they spent enough time to say they were the best on the market and then they moved on.The real test will be if the loyal Samsung fans will stay with them now that they have dropped the features they love.

Also once again all the steam was taken away from HTC as I have seen at least 3 Samsung posts today to every HTC post. I asked my non techie friends if they heard any major tech news over the weekend and they all mentioned the S6 no one said anything about HTC.

My prediction, sales of the S6 will be much better than the S5 (which isn't very hard to do)  however competition is heating up and the other OEM's are going to keep making gains on Samsung.

There is no pleasing everyone. You give them this, they complained about that. But I think at this juncture, this is the right move by Samsung. Their phones have become mainstream instead of geeky devices that calls for removable batteries and memory extensions.

Separately I am amused when Android fans criticizes Samsung. Had it not been for Samsung, Android would not have been able to compete with iPhone. Samsung's decline last year coincides with Apple regaining market share. There is no other Android manufacturer that has the resources and determination to take on Apple in the smartphone business.

p/s - I am not a Samsung fan boy. Writing this on LG G3.

I hate aesthetics. I hate form-over-function. I want a phone that works and gives me options - even of it is butt ugly. I just how that going forward there's a phone I will be willing to buy. I'm running out of options. Maybe Project Ara is here just in time.
