G+_Jacob Miles
I have a question about the Nexus Player that I hope someone on here can help me with. I am looking into buying a Nexus Player primarily as a Plex Client ( I know the Plex app is available), but my home network (WiFi) does not have access to the internet; only local network. Does the nexus player (like the chromecast) require an actual "Internet" connection, or will it work on an internetless home network as well? G+_Duncan Jaffrey
I do not have a nexus player so this is 3rd hand advice. I have been advised that the NP will work on a LAN serving local content using Kodi so I don't see why it wouldn't work with a plex server on a local network aswell. Unlike chromecast you actually have local smarts and decoding ect on the device, obviously the inbuilt chromecast functionality might be reduced but you only seem to care a bout plex. G+_Joseph Cappellino
I'm pretty sure it works on local networks. There are advanced settings that might need to be tweaked.
G+_Jacob Miles
Duncan Jaffrey Joseph Cappellino Thanks for the info, yes plex is my main concern. I would like to hear from someone who does actually have the device and can possible test if it still works for apps like Kodi and Plex even if there is not an internet connections. G+_Phil Chung
Jacob Miles? you don't need internet access for a Plex server on your local network.
G+_Jacob Miles
Phil Chung I know I don't need internet for the plex server, I'm wondering if the nexus player requires internet access to function.
G+_Phil Chung
Jacob Miles? Ah okay. It's an Android device, so it should be able to access the local network without the need for an internet connection.
G+_Joseph Cappellino
It looks like you might need an account to set it up. Once set up, it should just use the local network. ?
G+_Rob Phelps
I'm curious, what do you gain having a NP($99) as your Plex client versus using a Chromecast ($35) and the Plex app ($4-$5) on a phone or tablet?
G+_Duncan Jaffrey
Rob Phelps a dedicated system that doesn't need a phone, my 2 yo doesn't and won't have her own device for some time.

G+_Phil Chung
Rob Phelps I agree with Duncan Jaffrey. I love my Chrome cast, but it sometimes disconnects and there's a fair amount of lag. A remote control would be much easier, and installing some apps direct would be handy. Just not available in Australia yet... There's also Razer's Forge TV, which has certain advantages like an ethernet port, more storage and better GPU for the same price. Doesn't come with a remote control though - it relies on a phone app to control it, or buy a game controller for it.
G+_Duncan Jaffrey
Phil Chung I'm hoping there will be a Bluetooth hack for controlling it with a harmony ultimate, the forge is my current front runner.
G+_Phil Chung
Maybe the controller from a Nexus Player will work :-) It's Bluetooth. I would have thought any generic Bluetooth controller that you can use on a phone should work.
G+_Duncan Jaffrey
Phil Chung to work with harmony it will need some hackery
G+_Phil Chung
There's a thread about it here: http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Harmony-Hub-Based-Remotes/Asus-Nexus-Player-and-Harmony/m-p/1337271/highlight/true That's for the Nexus Player, but should be the same for the Forge TV as it's running Android TV. G+_Rob Phelps
Phil Chung , Duncan Jaffrey?, I see your point. The remote is an easier device. Not crazy about having yet ANOTHER remote, but I do see the pros to this set up. And if you're working with the Forge TV setup, it seems like a natural transition. The Chromecast is definitely not a gaming device, the lag is ridiculous. I primarily use it for my Plex. I have an old tablet running the client, and nothing more, and leave it on the sofa. Good luck with the bluetooth hack, sounds pretty cool if you can get to happen.
G+_Jacob Miles
Rob Phelps my main issue with chromecast (I have one) is that it will NOT work without a constant internet connection . Which is my real issue, I live in an area where I can not get cable or dsl, so my only internet options are satellite or tethering to my phone either way is limited bandwidth situation. G+_Rob Phelps
Jacob Miles? you are so right! Although I've got fairly reliable internet connection, I have had a time or two with no outside connectivity but can't watch a plex movie because it all relies on Chromecast. Which brings us right back to your initial concern; does the NP need an internet connection? Jason Howell? did a BYB, #152, so maybe if he sees this he can chime in and let you know.
