It seems like a widespread problem which might be hardware/design, but the units are still for sale in the Google Store. One engineer did turn up on the above thread to acknowledge the issue.

 

AnandTech did a bit of an investigation showing that the Pixel C suffers from some pretty poor WiFi performance.

I was bummed, because the device has a nice design / build quality, a great screen, and previewing Android N on it was pretty awesome. Luckily I was still able to return mine before the 15 day "buyer's remorse" period expired. The WiFi issues made it basically unuseable unless I was in the same room as the access point.
