I’ve been having some issues with my coaxial cable. Again. I know what’s happening- power surges coming through the coax- but this is the second time the same thing popped up in less than a year. It seems to be a problem on TWC's end because it’s affecting the TV boxes and the modem.

There is an appointment for a field tech to come out to look at the problem Sunday morning. Last time this happened, he replaced the connection from the house to the trunk. Is there something I can do or should look for and possibly replace myself/tell the tech about? Or would I be better off beating my head against a brick wall, since that seems more productive than trying to talk to TWC?

Unless they give you access to their network there's not much you can do and that's not too likely unless you are working for them.   You might check and make sure they added a lightning arrester where the cable comes into the house and that it's grounded properly to a good ground.  That should protect things inside the house but everything outside is their problem.

Steve C: I figured that might be the case. Last time, they tried charging $40 to replace the trunk connection. That was after replacing the modem and router on my end. The CSR didn't fight too much on that one, thankfully. If they try and do it again, I can make no promises I'll be as civil as I was last time.

Scott Weeks: I'll ask the tech when he comes out if there's already a filter as it's entering the house. Don't want to mess around inside the walls if I don't have to.

Wayne Hobbins: The tier 1 script readers (I refuse to believe they are techs!) tried about 5 times convincing me the problem wasn't on TWC's end last time. I'll try and plant the idea to look into the trunk wires into the tech's mind. Hopefully it'll go somewhere since they're in "OMGoogle!" panic mode and in the middle of upgrading things.

I had a similar situation with the cable co. here called Mediacom that must be the world's worst.  I tried it for about a year but they never could get it to work for more than a day or two at a time then it would be out for a week but they kept raising the rates even though they couldn't get it to work. I finally gave up and dumped it after the 3rd rate increase with no service.  Unfortunately for them the office was nearby so I could just go over there and yell at them every week and while I was there they would try to sell me their cable based phone service and I would say, yes but every time the cable is out how am I going to call in to complain?  They really didn't understand why that would be a problem though!
