G+_Vincent Panico
I have a question what kind of work can I do with a computer programming languages certification? As in a job/carrier, im doing it through Penn Foster Online.
G+_Michael Heinz
For my firm we generally look for at least a 4-year degree when hiring coders.
G+_Eddie Foy
Get involved in open source projects, it created a resume-portfolio.
G+_Vincent Panico
So what's the point of the certification then?
G+_Michael Heinz
The only point I know of is to take money from the student.
G+_E. Matt Armstrong
Check out the open source society on github for a free "honorary" computer science degree.

G+_Michael Heinz
Carson Black - I'm glad to hear there's someone else who checks for open source contributions at interview time; I'd just about given up because, at least where I live, people look at me like I've grown a 3rd eye when I ask them what sort of coding they've done outside of work... G+_Vincent Panico
Edward Armstrong so what can I do with this open source computer science degree?
G+_E. Matt Armstrong
Well it isn't an accredited degree. But some of the individual courses you can pay to get a certificate, the first course is $90. I don't know how an interviewing company would look at this compared to an "official" degree. But the first course is at Harvard, the second is MIT, etc. That does impress people. As to what you can do with it, most people I know have a degree in something different than what they do. My advice for people looking for a job today is. What do you want to do? Find a company that you want to work for go to them and see what kind of requirements the need in people they hire. I'm just doing the course for fun, to fill up my old knowledge hole.
G+_Vincent Panico
So I'm 35 what field as in computers would you recommend? Like app development, Web Development?
G+_Michael Heinz
It depends on your interests and skills. Obviously things web related are going to be more widely needed but there's also more competition. You might want to ask this question over on reddit's /r/programming forum - it's a much larger population of coders, you can get a wider view point.
