G+_Keith Mallett
Its a good idea to do freelance work anywhere you can; until some better offer comes along. Good Luck!
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Welcome to the Gig economy. It's REALLY hard at the start... but keep with it. Get you name out there. Collaborate. Take free jobs. -- You need to fake it until you make it. Good luck. :)
G+_Steve Martin
Many companies are willing to hire people to work remotely. Especially given how difficult it can be to find talented software engineers. However, to do that you are going to need to have a resume with some solid projects on it. If you can get any local work, even on a volunteer basis it will help get the experience you need to work your way up.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
I +1'd Carson Black ... but I'd +1000 if I could. That's EXACTLY how it starts. We always hear about those folk who are making a killing doing contract work... working when they want, contracting for the jobs they want... but it takes a while to get there for most of us. (There are very few rock-star contractors... and the rock-stars I know would never think of themselves ass rock-stars.) In other words... you work for yourself now... so show your boss that you're worth the hire. :)
