G+_January Ford
We're thinking about Christmas, and are wondering about tablets for my girls (7 and 10). Our device of choice would be a Nexus 7, but we started wondering about trying to find a device that is phone sized, but we wouldn't be using the phone. The usage would be listening to music, watching movies, and playing games. Think "Android version of an iPod Touch". Does such a beast exist? I see articles about Samsung devices from a couple years ago, but nothing recent. Any suggestions on what to look at? Right now I'm kicking myself for not picking up Nexus 4s when they were on for $199... :)
G+_Jim Macris
I can't think of anything phone sized in the android world, unless they still make the Archos 4.3. But if your looking for a good quality, affordable consumption device, last years Kindle Fire HD can be had for about $140. ?
G+_Kristopher “IrishGreen”
Nabi 2 is great too. Skinned android for kids, and parent mode which is stock android. My 5 yr old son loves his.
G+_James Healy
If you get a phone it will be able to make emergency calls without a SIM, so beware of that.
G+_Joshua Broyles
I got my 6 year old a nexus 7 last year for Xmas. She loves it, she carries it everywhere we go. I think 10" is to big for a child
G+_January Ford
Andrew Melder The profiles on a tablet are very very appealing, and I suspect it is going to be the deciding factor for us. We already have two Nexus 7s (2012) in the house, so maybe Mom and Dad need new devices, and the kids can have the hand-me-downs... ;) Thanks for the Nabi 2 suggestion Kristopher Davis but they look like they are geared for much smaller kids (same with the poetic case, +Eric Cardwell). Anyone had any experience with the Kobo Arc? At $139 for 16gb it will be hard to ignore... I should probably mention I'm in Canada where it is a bit more challenging to get to things like the Kindle Fire, and cheaper Virgin Mobile phones... :(
G+_Dave Bach
The Nexus 4 would be a nice option and you still may be able to find new ones for sale online...I'm thinking eBay. However, remember you'd be putting a highly breakable phone into your kids' hands. I'd also recommend you revisit the Nexus 7 idea which is what I'm typing this on. G+_January Ford
John Himmelberger I know that what I'm describing is an iPod Touch, but I'd rather not have to invest in multiple OSs, especially when we are already heavily invested in Android. Besides, the price point for getting an iPod is ridiculous.
G+_Dave Bach
May I suggest that if you're considering the F3 that you take a look at the LG Optimus L9. I personally would not recommend a phone you could only run on Virgin Mobile. At least with the L9 you could run it on a cheap T-Mobile prepaid plan or one of their MVNOs like Straight Talk or Walmart Family Mobile should you ever decide to. The L9 should be about $180 through Walmart off contract.
G+_Dave Bach
The L9 is currently running 4.1.2.
