G+_Travis Hershberger
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ Yes, you CAN take your drives out of a NAS box, connect them to a normal computer and recovery the RAID array. Most NAS boxes are using md (multi disk, the UNIX/Linux software RAID), managed with mdadm. Even MegaRAID/LSI use md under the hood. I actually tested this with a Dell 510 that has a MegaRAID controller in it. Created a RAID1 on some spare 80GB drives in the server. Put some random files on the array. Then put them in a standard desktop. 'mdadm --detail --scan /dev/sdb /dev/sdc' found the array and let me start the 'rebuild' process. My random files were still there. Years ago I also did the same thing with a Thecus NAS.
G+_Jason Perry
Steve Gibson mentioned in a recent security now episode it spinrite can do it.
G+_Benjamin Webb
Will not work for Drobo for sure. Just saving people time.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
I've absolutely done it, but I always do my homework beforehand. There are many NAS products that will absolutely kill the array if you try to do external maintenance on the drives. I don't want to be responsible for someone who nukes their RAID because I made the blanket statement that it always works.
G+_Jason Perry
Looking forward to the raid episode. I feel like there is so much to learn.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ Very true as well. You're comment on the show was just a quick "No". So when things start burning down, another option might be available. For the record, this should only be a last ditch effort.
