G+_Ben Reese
I'm with Jason Brown? on this. Just not sure how I'm going to convince the wife this this is a necessity.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Carlos Bedia I'm betting the only 10Gb ports on that switch are the uplink ports. Still a great deal on a 48 port gigabit switch.
G+_Rud Dog
Don't think there is a day to day use for this, is there?
G+_Ben Reese
Rud Dog? the link Carlos Bedia?? has gives one use case. I can imagine using this between a NAS and home server. But for most people (wife)... "This has 10 Gb? Didn't you just buy a 128 Gb sd card? What do you need that for?"
G+_Travis Hershberger
Rud Dog Probably not for most people... I'm not most people tho, a 10Gb network would make my life easier.
G+_Carlos Bedia
Travis Hershberger if you need more look for something like: ASIS-Quanta-LB6M they have those around to 200 or less. If you don't have a homelab (server or NAS) I do not see much point of having a 10 Gb/s NIC to connect to even a fiber to the home connection that most likely serves 1 Gb/s. Most at home will not need any of this but if you are posting deals about 10 Gb/s NICs I assume you do have some FreeNAS/Server and or homelab you want to test 10 Gb/s connectivity to. Ben Reese, you only need this if you need to access the data faster from a local server unless you have Internet conenctions faster than 1 Gb/s (and a router to process it). The other reason would be for tinkering, studying, learning how to do it. In that case why mess with just copper, imo. You can be clever and role IT projects into home improvements and convience her it is apart of something else she is requesting or increasing the value of your home. ebay.ca - Details about ASIS Quanta LB6M 24 Port 10GB Multilayer switch with 2x DPSN-300DB 1x Fan
G+_Jason Brown
My wife works from home, after a really bad bit of data loss during transfer, I got permission to run cable to every room. Where was this post back then? Can cat5e carry 10 gb reliably? If not, I'm kicking myself for saying no to cat6
G+_Carlos Bedia
+Jason Brown, I believe withing 55 meters Cat6 can do 10 Gb/s
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Ben Reese Tell your wife that Facebook will run faster... lol... At least it's nice to see 10GB pricing coming down to an acceptable level. Might be low enough to start testing here at my school department, we are on Gigabit still... G+_Ben Tyger
Jason Brown? It also supports the 2.5Gb and 5Gb standards for those that only have cat5e available.
G+_Ben Tyger
Ben Reese but copying that much data on to the 128GB card is sooo slow.....
